“Spring in Fjord” with MS Midnatsol, 1:1200 Revell

June 25, 2018 · in Ships · · 23 · 2.9K

Hello colleagues,
It's been a long time since I've post my last article. I was checking every new article on here every morning but had no time for share my new model. so now I have several models to show you.

MS Midnatsol in 1:1200 scale. 11cm long. small but nicely detailed model from revel new tooling in 2012.
From when I first saw this kit in local shop in two years ago, I always dreamed to make Norwegian Fjord diorama. after two year of modeling experience, I thought now I can handle this subject well. then I finished this in 3 weeks of work.

The main reference is "Geiranger Fjord" in Norway, Seven Sister's Waterfall. the waterfall falls from 400m of height.
the whole base is scratch built. Styroform body painted with modelling paste, soft epoxy water base with acrylic varnish wave, piece of sponge and baking soda snow. one thing I noticed after, there is no professional modelling materials in this set.

In the spring, snow on the top start to melt to make waterfall and because of it's high height of the cliff, the plant and trees put forth buds from down to upside. I colored this different in gradation vertically to express this scene of start of the season.

Thank you for watching!

  3. Very nice, great diorama

  4. Very nice. Unique and different model type. Really like it. Great job on this ship and the scenery is really cool!

  5. A remarkable piece of art - and posting the actual picture for reference was a great plus!

  6. I agree with Greg, a piece of art!

  7. Hello H C,

Excellent representation of the real situation in the Norwegian fjords. You are a master modeler. For those people who are interested, you can follow the whole coastline of Norway with this company. Breathtaking in winter and summertime. In the old days this was called the postal route. These days much more commercialized with cruise ships. The only thing I did not get used to were the Norwegian prices for important goods as for instance a cold beer. With those prices you drink it as were it champagne. Regards, Dirk / The Netherlands.

    • I desperately dream to visit there. and also I heard there is museum of 'Trolfjord' company which have this Midnatsol ship in service. now you say it's good to visit both in summer and winter, maybe I have to plan to visit twice. but price is still a problem like you say!

  8. Wow, that is truly AMAZING. Just fantastic!

  9. Hongseob, just how the hell did you arrive at his idea? I'm being serious, can you remember what made you think of this project? It is spectacular.

  10. I attach a picture and my sketch which brought me here. I really wanted to express this greatness of nature here. but not all of it, because the model will be a meter or more, just represent the essence of it.
I didn't planned that inclined back before. but after I saw harden epoxy is heavy enough, I decide to cut all the rest!

  11. Wonderful work. Literally cutting edge modeling...

  12. Wow mate, amazing work! Been lucky to visit Geiranger Fjord, albeit on a much much smaller ferry that day. Unfortunately it was early September and not much rain made waterfalls less impressive than usual.

  13. Wonderful! I was only in the Fjords once aboard a Navy Carrier, so we did not get in anywhere near that close! I love your depiction, just great!
