I've about finished selling these old slides of my dads, so thought I'd start posting some of these pics in a series. Dad flew with a camera frequently and took some great air-to-air photos (as well as some stuff on the ground). I just finished arranging them into a 58 page picture book that I ordered from Shutterly - can't wait to get it back!

After he finished his basic jet training in the T-33, he went through fighter training in the Hun at Luke AFT, AZ (where I was born) and at Nellis AFB, NM. Then his first fighter assignment was with the 478th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Cannon AFB, NM.

I have a soft spot for all the aircraft he flew, and besides my love-affair with the Rhino, the Hun is probably my next favorite. Elegant, and still has a "fighter form" that the 101 and 105 kinda lost to the interceptor/nuke delivery design.

That is him climbing into the cockpit.

  7. Super photos Greg the air to air shots are wonderful, I also like the others - little bits of life on the base - aircraft on the ramp - support vehicles etc. fascinating to see!
    More please!

  8. great photos...your dad was a stud...i lived on Okinawa in 1961 and went to school at Kadena though pop was navy...Kadena was loaded with F100s commanded by Gabreski...the school bus drove all around the airfield...Kamikaze revetments... great memories

    • That must have been sweet to see them in person. I was born while dad started in the 100's at Luke AFB, so by the time I was old enough to be cognizant of what he was flying he was long past the 100's! I don't ever recall seeing them other than in photos. Same with the 101's. I do remember the 105's and everything from there on. @p38j

    • My father was a USAF flight surgeon with the 18th TFW, 12th TFS at Kadena in 1961, and was Gabreski's doctor. He has cool stories about him. He also took flight pay and sat in the back seat of the F model Hun. He took some cool photos, too.

  9. More great photos! Thanks!

  10. Such an elegant machine, always loved the Super Sabre, unfortunately never got to see one fly. Great article, Greg.

  11. Greg, I was stationed at Cannon AFB 1973-1979 flying F-111D's. I recognize the "flat nothing" in your flightline photos. We had the Air National Guard F-100's from Fort Smith, Arkansas come fly with us one summer around 1977. They were the last F-100 unit in the Air Force, and their Huns went to the Boneyard soon after. It was neat watching them fly...but they sure didn't like the high density altitude and temps on takeoff.

  12. I was in Vietnam when these were flying missions over the north.. WOWZA they made HUGE JET noise on takeoff... I even saw one drop the wing mounted bombs at the end of the runway OOOOOPS...

  13. Greg- I noticed in a couple of pics of the D model Huns you posted have the large capacity wing tanks. These were F-101 tanks modified with two fins for use on the nuke carrier F-100D's and the only other time I've seen pics of Huns with them are in photos my dad took while based on Kadena from 1960- 1963. He was a flight surgeon attached to the 18th TFW/ 12th TFS. Fellow modeler and historian Mike Benolkin has a great F-100 website and you can see a couple pics dad took. And, you can post your pics there too. Great post, man!
