2 Doolittle Raiders

November 16, 2018 · in Aviation · · 9 · 2.3K

Hi All.
I posted these Doolittle Raiders on the Movies Group Build, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo but I'd like to share them with everyone here too. Hope that's acceptable to duplicate my efforts.
I completed these B-25b's earlier this year. Depicting Jimmy Doolittle's and Ted Lawson's (The Ruptured Duck) ships.
The decks (a wee bit too blue for me) were downloaded and printed out on card stock and then glued to the base. I added the deck tie downs and chocks to give it a little bit more "feel".
You can view more on the Movie Group along with my 1/700 USS Hornet: https://imodeler.com/groups/imoder-at-the-movies-1964926360/forum/topic/thirty-seconds-over-tokyo/

Hope you enjoy!

  1. nice tribute...well done

  2. I like the both very much, there is something very realistic about that OD that I just can’t explain, perhaps some weathering technique /product?

    • Thanks Pedro. My normal painting/weathering is kind of old school and was used on these as well.

SAFETY FIRST: "I always use a mask/respirator and ventilation with all painting"

Prime with grey. Sometimes black. Usually Mr. Surfacer 1500.
Base color: Mr.Color Olive Drab for the B-25's.
A couple coats of acrylic clear coat...used to use Future I believe it's Pledge now.
      Decals.
More clear coat to seal the decals.
Thinned artist oil paint...usually burnt umber...as a wash in crevices and panel lines.
Dry brushed highlights on panels. A lighter color of the main color and then a "complimentary" color such as yellow or ochre, in this case, and then finally a very light dry brushing of white.
Sometimes a clear coat of flat clear. Not used on these.
Additional thinned wash as needed; ie. engines, oil stains, etc.

When it comes to "weathering" I always use the technique "when you think it needs a little more...STOP!" that little bit more will be too much.
      Hope this helps.

  3. They look great, nice presentation!

  4. Nice models Gary.

Pedro - the raiders weren't weathered. Painted just before they flew to the West Coast, then one mission.

  5. Nicely done Gary, they both look great. Read the book in 8th grade as a library assignment needless to say I coudn't put in down.

  6. Really nicely done, Gary!

    Great book ... Great Models!

  7. Great looking Mitchell's! The tie-downs were a nice addition.
