U-96

November 20, 2018 · in Diorama · · 17 · 5.6K

Hello everyone, this is an older work of mine. It is the Revell U-Boat type VIIC in scale.

I used the Griffon photoetch detail set, and 3D printed figures from Shapeways. Everything else (scaffolding, equipment, tools, crates, barrels, paint buckets, etc.) was scratchbuilt.
You can view a WIP thread here https://www.modelclub.gr/forums/index.php/topic,31353.0.html

Hope you like it!
Nick

  1. Marvelous job! Congratulations

  2. Fantastic work, Amazing in such a small scale. WOW...

  3. Outstanding work Nikos, especially for something that small.

  4. Hello Nikos,
This U-Boat in overhaul really made my day.
Especially the detail in hauling, or lowering the torpedo, shows clearly, this was not easy to preform. Job well done. Considering it is scale 1/144.
    Regards, Dirk / The Netherlands.

  5. Beautiful job ?
Actually I did not know how torpedos were loaded in a submarine. I learned something today thanks to your fantastic model.
    Bravo Nikos!

  6. Thank you all for your kind words, they are really apreciated.

I think that torpedoes would not be loaded in dry dock, as this scene depicts, but i took "modelling" permission from the captain...

  7. Beautiful diorama - looks fantastic.

  8. Top !... i like it

  9. You wouldn't think it is 1:144 scale! Well done!

  10. I agree, thought it was at least 1/72, great job!

  11. Just goes to show what can be done in this scale. Amazing

  12. 1/144 superb work Nikos, wonderful posing of the tiny figures!

  13. Superb, really love it. Love models of U-Boats and you really deserve some praise for your accomplishment on this one. The overall diorama, and presentation is great also, along with some good photography. You really captured all the look of a war weary North Atlantic war vessel, rust and all. Can smell the oil, rusting metal, and the sea. The sailors dont smell so great either...LOL! I think 1/144 is the perfect scale for subs of this type. 1/350 to small. 1/144 allows some really nice size to work with, detail, jazz-up. I built one of Revell's versions of this exact model recently. I think you saw it but dont recall. I also built it a while ago sort of plain and OOB then recently vamped up so I could sell it. I had fun weathering it like I am sure you did. Dont u love the Shapeway figures. I recently purchased some Royal sailors in 1/144 for my Corvette build. I was amazed at the overall quality and detail of these figures. Go price also. Shapeway just pumped up its prices a good amount so not to happy with them right now though.

  14. Thank you. The shapeways figures were good but required a good amount of sanding, and I managed to break off some limps and heads while doing so. I think I got mine for about 25 euros but it was 2-3 years ago. Got to try some from North Star sometime.

  15. Oh. My. God. this is simply amazing. Bravo zulu mate, stunning work
