Fleet Air Arm Corsair IV

December 21, 2018 · in Aviation · · 17 · 3.3K

This is the scale kit of the -1D as supplied to the British & represents a Corsair IV in the markings of 1842 Sqn. as flown from HMS Formidable in July 1945. The markings are those adopted by the FAA in the final year of WWII in the Pacific theatre to avoid confusion between the Allies.

My local IPMS club is conducting an 'out - of - the - box' competition later this year & I thought I'd get in early. The only extras permitted are after market seat belts & different decals. For this model I've used stretched sprue for hydraulic lines & ignition leads & fitted a clear tail light also from clear sprue. My reference photo clearly shows the earlier framed blown canopy & I understand these were fitted to early F4U-1Ds. These Tamiya Corsairs are brilliant , as are the Eagle Cals decals & I look forward to doing more!

  1. A magnificent looking Corsair. Undoubtedly one of the best looking and performing fighters of WW II. You did an amazing job on this one. Well done!

  2. Beautifully built and finished, Tony! Good luck in your club contest. I think you'll do well.

The Corsair is such an iconic aircraft and was one of the most outstanding aircraft in an era of outstanding aircraft.

  3. Very nicely done Tony, I think you have a winner there.

  4. Muy bien acabado y pintado.

  5. Very well done. Really looks the part.

  6. Nice looking Corsair! To me that blue has just the right amount of 'flatness' to it showing some time in the baking sun. Nice work!

  7. This is a stunning Corsair ! You have really captured the look extremely well. Between this article and the "on this day" post from David LS, you guys have inspired me to fire up the assembly line and crank out a few FAA planes.

Those Tamiya F4Us are excellent kits right out of the box.

    Well done my friend.

  11. Tony, this looks wonderful, I really like the paint/markings, Very attractive. I was wondering what paint you used, as the color looks very good to me !

    • Hi Terry. Model Master Acryl Dark Sea Blue 4686 thinned with their Acryl 50496 thinner & primed with Tamiya white primer from the can. Very light rub down between coats. This sprays really well with a smooth just off gloss finish. Glad you like it.

  12. Lovely project, Tony. The colours are rich and satisfying, so easy to get these one colour birds a little one dimensional - no fear of that here.
