Monogram B-25 Mitchell – Air Apache – 1/48 scale

December 13, 2018 · in Aviation · · 5 · 3K

This model is not mine. I acquired this model after my good friend, Darrell Cochran, passed away suddenly in 2010. After his passing, his wife asked those of us in the model club if we would assist her in inventorying Darrell's collection. It was quite a task. I think Darrell had over 3000 model kits in his collection. Darrell was a frequent First Place winner at many IPMS/USA Nationals and, I believe, a Best of Show - Aircraft Winner as well. Some of his builds are even in the F-89 and F4U Detail & Scale books.

I asked his wife if I could have this model. I wanted this model for a very special reason. This was the first model I saw when I attended my first scale model club meeting. At the time, 1986, my modeling skill's were less than stellar (I was 15 years old). I just marveled over this model when Darrell brought it. This model was the standard to which all my other builds were to be measured.

I am proud to be the custodian of this model to ensure Darrell's legacy lives on. I don't know where the rest of his built collection went, but I know this one is safe.

  1. This model deserves to be held in the regard you describe. I have a few from treasured friends, but having built this kit myself, the workmanship is just great. I think it makes just that much more of a statement to see it here!

  2. Steve, thanks for sharing this with us. You do your friend VERY proud! The painting is superb. It's a great looking B-25.

  3. Having built that kit myself, it's obvious what quality and talent your friend brought to this project. I think we'd all like to be remembered that way.

  4. Did you wrote 1986? This B-25 is still a stellar model today, where the tolls and AM stuff really help improving the basic plastic contents of any kit. Your late friend Darrel truly was a gifted modeler, and like Tom says I’m sure he would like to see your homage and be remembered for his work

  5. A beautiful build.
