One down, three to go!

January 19, 2019 · in Sci-fi · · 8 · 1.8K

My goal for the first part of the new year was to have a few fun builds before a "serious" project. My wife, kids and son in law helped out with some great kits for my birthday and Christmas. I stated with "Space Clipper" which of course is the Orion 3 space plane from the movie 2001 a . The kit is pretty good by Sci Fi kit standards. Fit is decent, detail adequate, and it built pretty quickly. The decal sheet does not have the Pan Am markings, but they are readily available on the aftermarket. The decals provide all the panel detail and panel shading. Mine seemed to shatter readily, which caused me to lose the top decals aft of the cockpit area. I rebuilt this with pin striping, which looks good, but is wider than the decal lines that came on the sheet. Really though I still like how it looks, and being a Sci Fi "fun" kit, I am just NOT going to worry about it! So here she is, layers of white, gloss, and more gloss! I really enjoyed this kit and had a blast building it in just a few weeks since Christmas. Next will be "Digger" HA! If only I had a tube of testors highly toxic cement and some Pactra paint!

  1. Nice work Rob,white is such a tricky colour to work with-lovely subtle effect on the surface panels.
I loved lil coffin looking forward to seeing 'digger' in progress!

  2. Looks like it's right out of the movie! I always liked this ship,I refurbed an Aurora kit awhile back , it's somewhere on this site. I notice the little red baron hot wheels and the kit, cool!

  3. great job on this and cool collection of nostalgia

  4. Digger is already about 80% finished, I started in after posting this last night. I plan on a mostly rattle can finish with some brush painting. I will sand some seams I suppose, so it won't be a 100% "kid" finish!

  5. 🙂 … Greetings … 🙂 :
Rob my friend, that is what I would deem as a … Blast from the Past. And what a beautiful Blast it is. Clean and sharp, I would not be surprised if a travel agency will exhibit this piece.

  6. Nicely done Rob, ever since looking at it Strauss's "The Blue Danube" keeps playing in my head, I like it.

  7. looking real good Rob.

  8. The clipper looks great - and man, you've got some eclectic taste!
