Tamiya 1/48 F4U-1A Corsair

January 22, 2019 · in Aviation · · 30 · 3.2K

Hello iModeler! Here is my , built out of the box except for some True Details resin wheels. I used EZ line for the antenna wires. Paints are Vallejo Model Air acrylics shot freehand through my Sotar 20/20. It's kind of hard to see, but I also added ignition wires to the cylinders.

This was a fun kit to build. The fit overall was pretty good, although I did have to take my time getting the wing sections to fit smoothly. If I had opted to pose the wings folded, that would not have been an issue.

Anyways, thanks for looking - until next time!

  1. That turned out very out very well Ramon. I agree with the wings, I chickened out and went with the fold option

  2. Beautiful build, my friend...gotta love those Tamiya Corsairs - 🙂
I've built several, both extended and folded wings - no issues encountered.

  3. Excellent build, nice airbrush work!

  4. Gorgeous! nice finish, and balance. I just picked up a birdcage off of ebay...and Vallejo paints, this is a great motivator.

  5. Excellent build! Love the weathering.

  6. Very nice Ramon. Great job on the weathering.

  7. Very redone!
    Congratulations

  8. Now who doesn't like a Corsair? Nicely done Ramon, this old dude likes it.

  9. I'm with Tom here, Ramon ... and all the others! This F4U is great! I really like that you did the 3-color scheme with the red outlined star & Bars!

As Tom said: "Now who doesn’t like a Corsair?" Amen!

  10. Very nice looking - I'll add my voice to the others, and say it looks great! I do also really like the way you weathered it. just the right amount in my opinion. and I like the way you have the primer showing through on some of the wear areas.

    • Thanks Paul! i was experimenting with new weathering techniques on this build. It didnt turn out as I expected but I did learn from it and will apply lessons learned to the next build. 🙂

  11. Excellent! Love the weathering and finish work on this - looks spot-on! A beauty of a Corsair.

  12. Very nicely done Ramon...great job on the tri-color scheme and the weathering. As a side note, 'BIG HOG' (F4U-1A 17649) did survive its combat service and was returned to the U.S. to be refurbished and assigned to the training command.

  13. Nice work, great result.

An easy way to solve the fit problems on the wing is to take some thin plastic sheet and make tabs - glue them into the outer wing, and you have some "extra surface" for the glue to grab.

  14. Very nice finish.
