1/72 Avro Lancaster B.III

March 25, 2019 · in Aviation · · 25 · 2.7K

This is the kit that was released around 2005-06. The RAF group build inspired me to refresh my bomber collection a bit. This one was too late for the party. I chose this kit over the new Airfix kit simply because it was on sale. I purchased it for a bit over $20 US, which is about 1/3 of what these things listed for when they first came out. I've always wanted to do the “Phantom of the Ruhr”, and this was my chance. This plane survived 121 missions over Europe, the longest of which was a round trip to Turin. The kit assembled extremely well with the exception of the nacelles which required some work to get assembled properly and attached to the wings. The paints are Xtracolor and Humbrol enamels. The decals are a mix of kit walkways/stencils, Aeromaster national insignia, Kitsworld nose art, and Xtradecal codes. The codes represent the Phantom early in her career with 100 Squadron. Overall I'm happy with it, but my next Lanc will be an Airfix kit which features superior detail. Thanks for looking.

  4. Great looking Lancaster John. Nice subtle exhaust stains.

  5. Beautiful job, love the nose art!

    • Thanks, Robert! It’s very striking and appropriate nose art. RAF bombers sported some interesting nose art that isn’t as well known as 8th AF art.

  6. Wow she really looks fantastic John. I've been watching it come together in your build journal, and this reveal posting looks even better ! I especially like the exhaust streaks on the wings and the nose art.

    Well done my friend...

  11. Impressive build John. I more of a jet person but feel myself getting drawn towards building a Lancaster one day.

  12. Thanks, Richard. Lanc has always been my favorite bomber. This is #3 for me. I did the original 1958 Airfix kit in ‘73 or ‘74. The second was the Matchbox Lanc around 1988. I’ve got a new mold Airfix MkII with radial engines in the stash. I hope to see you post one too!

  13. Very good looking indeed. Well done!
