1/72 Special Hobby P-40N

March 22, 2019 · in Aviation · · 12 · 3.2K

I just finished this one earlier today. P-40N painted with MRP paints. The only things added were the gunsight bead from master and Eduard steel seatbelts. The markings are from DK decals and represent a P-40N from the 418th NFS operating in the Philippines. The 418th NFS at the time was operational with P-61's.

From the 418th NFS History:

"There was an expectation of long night intruder missions starting in the near future. Some of these missions might start at dusk or be completed at dawn, when there was vulnerability from Japanese day fighters. A day fighter pilot was brought in from a nearby unit to give our night fighter pilots a quick course in day fighter tactics, requiring an element of two aircraft to provide mutual protection. Our CO, Capt. WILLIAM B. SELLERS, found a somewhere and delighted in“jumping” us without warning while we were up on routine local daytime flights to see how many evasive mistakes we might make. This quickly demonstrated the difficulty of shaking an attacker when one doesn't have a wingman close by."

The aircraft was nicknamed after Captain Sellers Young son "Rusty"

  1. Geoffrey, I had to go back and make sure it was actually 1/72 scale. Very nice !

  6. Geoffrey,

You picked a fine canvas for making a P-40 N. It is my opinion that these relatively new P-40 kits from Special Hobby are some of better kits in this scale and you've done a superb job of making this kit really stand out.

Two thumb up on this one.

  7. Geoffrey,

That's a fine build of a 1/72nd subject and a great choice of markings...very well done.

  8. Very fine job on this P-40!

  9. 🙂 … Greetings … 🙂 :
A P-40 is always a welcomed sight, and this one is truly no exception. When one considers the scale, it carries more weight in a very positive way … very nice work Geoffrey.

  10. Nice model, cool story, just-right weathering.

  11. Love that P-40! Nice job.

  12. Lovely P-40, especially when starting with a Special Hobby kit - they can be cantankerous!
