Airfix P-51D 1/48

March 2, 2019 · in Aviation · · 14 · 2.9K

First completion of 2019. Actually its been in process for awhile. The kit is well done with no flaws to mention. Airfix's color coded assembly instructions came in handy in a few steps though. I added an P-51D interior PE set, which really enhanced the cockpit, and Aeromaster B D Checkertail Clan Part 2 decals. The metal finish is AK Extreme Metal. The other colors are a mix of Mission Models, Real Colors, Testors, and Tamiya. This was my first bare metal AC project in a long while. I started with Alclad metals but didn't like the results. I then switched to Extreme Metal which went on like a dream. Will be doing more metal planes in the future.

  4. Your first picture is so peculiar I mistook it for one of those BD drawings, such is the intensity of the colours... it really puzzled me for a few seconds! It’s a true real to life Mustang, well done sir

  9. Dennis, Sweet Mustang !

  10. Hi Dennis, looks awesome! What were the problems with the Alclad colours? How did you seal everything? It is so great shining!

    • Even applying it over their primer and a gloss black coat, the Alclad didn't have a good shiny finish. Based on the advice of a good friend I applied Xtreme Metal which dried to a nice finish and is very durable. I had no problems masking it to apply other colors.

  11. Nicely done Dennis, really like the finish you put on her.

  12. Great looking Pony, Dennis! Well done. I shy away from NMF, but may have to give the Xtreme a try.
