Airshow today in Peru, Illinois, “TBM Reunion-Salute to Veterans”.

I spent the better part of today at an airfield in Peru which is exactly 100 miles SW of Chicago. This area is home to some of the most fertile farmland in the world, and some of the nicest people you will meet anywhere. It featured a fly-in and airshow honoring local veterans. Six TBMs were in attendance along with another six SNJ/T-6s, several Beech twins, two Cessna 195s, PT-17,T-34, C-47, Piper Cub, and even an L-39 Albatross. One of the Beech twins put on an impressive aerobatic performance. Never thought I’d see that. Bad weather moved in and scheduled appearances by a Mig-17, F-86, FM-2, F8F and SEVEN more TBMs were cancelled. The first two TBM flights of the day carried a 95 year old WW2 Avenger pilot and a Japanese pilot who was also in his 90s who made the trip from Tokyo for the occasion. I took some photos that you guys might enjoy.

  1. Looks like you had a good turn out, even with the change in weather. Thanks for sharing these photos with us……….. 🙂

  2. Hey John, here’s what a flight in Matt Younkin’s Beech looks like from the cockpit in Oshkosh! (Notice how much of a workout the trim wheel gets!) He also does a very dazzling night routine.

  3. Wonderful photos John! – thank you!

  4. Lot of iron in that first shot. Those two Cessnas are nice. Thanks for the photos John.

  5. Too bad the other appearances were cancelled…that very well could’ve been a record for the most most Avengers in one place (as far as I know, anyway) – thanks for sharing.

  6. Great photos! Thanks for sharing them.
