AW Siskin Mk.III 1/72 (Matchbox)

May 15, 2019 · in Aviation · · 16 · 2.9K

Hello again,
I would like to present a few pics of one of my older models – a from . A few details were scratchbuilt and the rigging was made from a black stockings (nylon thread). Kit was painted using GunzeSangyo Super Metalizer dulled with a few drips of white and grey. The decals are downfall of the model - I used original ones from a 1974 box...

  1. Great work Marek - the additional rigging and fine work to the basic kit is superb!

  2. Lovely! Making these old basic kits into respectable replicas is one of my favorite types of projects, and you did a great job with this one. Well done.

  3. Don't recall ever seeing one of these before...turned out very well indeed.

  4. I built this kit as a kid in 1984. It was one of my favourite kits. You really did an amazing job on this model. You made it shine in all the right places! Well done Marek.

  5. A stunning build, looks great!

  6. These 'between the wars' are probably the best kits that Matchbox made and you did it justice. Very nice build!

  7. Matchbox really stepped up their game for their biplanes, and you really made it shine! Fine detail work on the engine and rigging. Love those huge upperwing roundels, I hear they were the largest ever applied.

  8. that is a treasure

  9. 🙂 … Greetings … 🙂 :
A blast from the past, love it. Nice model and rigging Marek.

  10. Lovely build, and indeed shows that you can still make a very nice model out of these older kits.
And a type of airplane you don't see often. Very well done.

  11. Certainly the rigging plays a major role in making this model so convincing, but I also like how Marek reproduced the wooden propeller blades and how he detailed the Jaguar engine.
Turning cheap old plastic into a valuable realistic scaled reproduction of a historical aircraft is a kind of art, and this model is a clear example of that :).

  12. Well, I am late to the party here, Marek, but not only do I like it for the quality of the build, but as a bonus, I got to see a plane completely NEW to me.

    Well done, my friend!

  13. Thank you All for the very nice comments! I love those old biplane kits - still have some ancient Airfix, Matchbox and Monogram releases in stash. One day hopefully... 😉

Also, a word warning for all who would like to build those old kits - the vintage plastic (from 1974 in this case) is reacting badly to White Spirit. The whole lower wing nearly fall apart after accidental spillage - the structure of material resembled a broken car windscreen and it became extremely brittle.

  14. Really nice build of this old kit. I love these old Machbox kits, but yes I also remember that the decals are sometimes horrible - I built a Siskin years ago and the decals spoiled my work at the end. I really like how You detailed the engine!

  15. Thank you Gábor! In fact, the Jaguar engine was one of the things that drawn my attention to this kit.
