Saab J 29 Tunnan, Austrian Air Force/ Pilot Replicas 1:48

May 29, 2019 · in Aviation · 11 · 3.4K

Hello, I'd like to introduce a Triplett Saab J 21 Tunnan by Pilot Replicas in 1:48 that I'm currently working on.
Two of them will be in flawless markings on their own wheels, while the third one is planned as a rather weathered gate-guard machine. The last eight pictures show this special Tunnan.

I am of course always grateful for all hints on how to get such a well weathered example convincingly! πŸ™‚

  1. Quite the production line ya got goin' there - I like the cockpit work, too. Lookin' forward to the result(s). Welcome aboard.

  2. Looks like you're getting a pretty nice weathered result! Would love to compare to reference photos...

    Welcome!

  3. They look great, Roland! I really like your work in the cockpit.

  4. Thank you Craig, Greg and Jeff for your comments and for welcoming me in this friendly way!

I will show you if course my references for the weathered gate guard, Greg.

At first I am able to present a few pictures of the first "Fliegende Tonne" finished out of that triple: it depicts "Red Echo" from 2. Staffel Jabogeschwader in Graz-Thalerhof. By the way, this special Tunnan got infamous by taking a fiery end after crash landing in Czechoslovakia in October 1964.

I hope you like the outcome.

  5. The boarding ladder is from Maestro Models

  7. Some project, eh. The J 29 got very grey as it weathered, not shiny new aluminium, even in service. Also good to make the canopy weathered, a sort of milky transparent if you get what I mean. Will you put the gate guard on a plinth?

  8. I do! I will present the "Flying Ton" on a pole. The whole thing stands on a small hill, surrounded by some landscape. Well, a small dog with an urgent need will also play a role... "sic trasnit gloria mundi"

  9. I would like to show you a few pictures of the "gate guard Tunnan under de-construction" πŸ™‚
I have sprayed layer of Alclad Dull Aluminum over the surfaces, after the have been coated with liquid masking agent. That was rubbed off after drying and thatΒ΄s the result.
Now is time for some dry-brushed tear and wear!

  10. Uuuups! Did I get something wrong with that "masking the canopy"? πŸ™‚
No, I hope! The first picture shows the preparations to make the windows a little cloudy: diluted light brown colour was applied with an airbrush to the classic parts.
The surfaces of the "gate guard" Tunnan are now ready for my taste. Now only the diorama has to grow!

  11. To complete this triple: here are some pictures of the final presentation of the "gate guard" Tunnan.

By the way: I feel not responsible for the behavior of any dogs that cannot behave themselves πŸ™‚
