Tamiya F4U-1 Corsair in 1/48.

May 28, 2019 · in Aviation · · 28 · 2.8K

Just completed for our IPMS group build display in July. The has to be a kit, built out of the box (seat belts & pilot are permitted) I was surprised to find that this is my fifth build of this kit, with my enthusiasm undiminished. Not problems, no putty & no hassles. The model depicts the aircraft flown by 1st Lt. W.J.Thomas, Guadalcanal in July 1943.
Paint; Model Master, Decals; Kit & Sky Models. A most satisfying build all round.

  1. I like your Corsair a lot Tony. The build looks solid and the paint work flawless. The weathering is just right, a bit different from most F4U posted here lately that have a more intense & dramatic wear and tear. Congrats!

  2. Tony. Great job. Love the subtle weathering effect, especially the faded look effect.

  3. lovely hog tony

  4. Gotta love those Tamiya Corsairs...including this one ! 🙂

  5. Nice work Tony !

  6. Great work on this Tony!

  7. Tony great build as to be expected from a Master modeler like yourself. Your paint finish and subtle weathering makes this Gull wing killer shine in all the right places.

  8. What a wonderful article ... it has everything going for it. The subject happens to be my favorite plane as well. Thanks for sharing this beauty with us. I currently have two of these on the work bench. They are little gems !

Your paintwork and photography is top notch...

    "liked"

    • Thanks Louis.Glad you like it. One of the pleasures of the hobby is the research I do. I reckon I spend more time on the 'net than I do at the workbench. Always a pleasure to share.

  9. I echo everything said above. All-around great build and finish.

  10. Beautiful Corsair!

  11. Great looking Corsair - love the paint and weathering work. Well done.

  12. Very nicely done Tony, both the model and the photography look great. Those Tamiya Corsair's are fine kits to work with.

  13. Beautiful!

I sure hope Jim Sullivan (Mr. Corsair) sees this beauty! I like the early paint schemes MUCH better than Dark Sea Blue all over. (See F4Us, F6Fs, F7Fs, F8Fs ... you get my point! LoL!)

    BORING !

But NOT your F4U ... IT'S FAR FROM BORING!

    Bravo, Tony!

  14. Thanks Jeff. I tend to agree with you; DSB can be boring. As an alternative, have a look at some of the Fleet Air Arm Corsairs in dark sea grey & slate camouflage which served in the Indian Ocean or the British Pacific Fleet. They fade very nicely!
My next will probably be a -1A in the tri-color scheme. I've seen some pictures of them not merely faded, but bleached!

Very realistic weathering, especially the fading effect of paints. Congratulations, Tony!

  16. Thank you Shun; I tried using a black primer & it seems to have helped with the weathering effects & the gradual build up of thin coats.

  17. Very nice. As you said, gotta love the Tamiya Corsairs. I've built 1½ of them. The ½ is a conversion to a British one, stalled out on the small fuselage vents
