AMT 1/48 P-40N “Rosie the Riviter”

August 24, 2019 · in Aviation · · 19 · 2.3K

Rosie is my entrance into the Teeth and Fangs GB here on iModeler. This A/C flew with the 49th Fighter Group, 7th Fighter squadron, and that's all the information I could find concerning this . I did locate a single B/W photo of the original Rosie but no other information: i.e. pilot/pilots or missions flown.

After a very hectic spring and summer, my wife broke her hip on the first day of vacation in late April, I've had little time for models. Hence I decided I needed to get my MOJO back with something quick and relatively easy to build. Easy because I've built several of the AMT P-40 kits and I'm very familiar with their construction. Besides one can never have enough P-40's displayed on the shelf.

Aftermarket items were an Ultracast seat, as well as wheels and exhaust stacks. Paints were a combination of rattle cans, brush painted Model Master acrylics in the cockpit, and airbrushed Model Car World lacquer for the white tail. It covers really well but you better have an spray booth because it's lacquer. Antenna wire is nylon thread. The stars and bars are from Fundeckals, the nose art from the kit and anything additional from the spares box. I enhanced the gun site by adding some clear acetate to represent glass, the IP is a decal from the spares.

I always start by builds with the goal being this model is going to be perfect. Well, not this time but Rosie looks like a P-40N and I'm happy with the result. By the way" she who must be obeyed" is recovering quite well which means more time for the bench in my future.

Happy modeling everyone.

  1. Very, very nice P-40 Tom, and these photos sure do justice to the wonderful teeth adorning the intake.
Congratulations are due, not only for the splendid model but also for being the first complete build in the GB!

  2. Looks like the Mojo is back and working fine. Nice job, Tom!

  3. Great work on this Tom. The base also looks really nice!

  4. There is nothing like modeling therapy to navigate life's road bumps and ups and down. Take a familiar build ...revisit a good plastic friend and have some fun.

    Two thumbs up.

  5. Nice work, Tom!

  6. Nice work my friend! I am starting mine these days. P-40N Eduard mauve. I think I will try the black basing. Again nice work my friend and beautiful aircraft!

  7. Nicely done Tom! Getting ready to start work on the toothy "challenge" you gave me!

  8. Beautiful P-40 Tom! nicely done.

  9. Nice work on this on, Tom!

  10. Beautiful build AND photography. 🙂 🙂

  11. Prayers to your wife, Tom, and very sorry to hear about the difficulties. But you've turned out another fine P-40, and I recognized your hand in it from the headliner photo alone. Nicely done, as usual.

P.S. And I'm taking your advice for easing back into things myself!

  12. I'm happy to hear that the misses is on her way to recovery. Life occasionally throws up obstacles for us when we least expect it. It's how we handle them that set us apart. Your a good man Tom.

This one has all of the trademarks of a Bebout Build. The magnificent display base, a very nice background setting AND it's a P-40 ! What's not to like about this one ? It checks all the boxes.

You did good buddy. Looks like you got your Mojo back...

    I like it... a LOT !

  13. Very nice Tom. Love the base to. ?

  14. 🙂 … Greetings … 🙂 :
Happy to hear your wife is doing better.
Nice modeling Tom, clean and sharp.

  15. A great looking Warhawk! I'm beginning to think that the P-40 is probably one of my favorite WWII subjects to model - I've noticed my stash of unbuilt hawks is starting to grow...

  16. Tom, I'm sorry to hear about your bride. I understand completely when you say that everything else gets put on hold.

"Rosie" looks great. She certainly fits well into the "Teeth and Fangs" GB (Group Build)! To ME, when someone mentions "teeth" on an aircraft, I automatically think of P-40s and the AVG in China! I'm glad you were able to find some time to build and finish this great Warhawk!

Bravo ! You and your wife will be in my prayers.
