GasPatch’s 1/48 scale Hs123

August 31, 2019 · in Aviation · · 23 · 2.5K

Hi, guys... my first posting here, so a little apprehensive after seeing some of the offerings already posted. Some really smart kits and a lot of work put into them as well.

So, for my first foray into this website, I've posted these photos of my Hs123 which I finished in February of last year. It was built more or less from the box, with only seat belts added from Eduard's 'Superfabric' range, and some thin, stretched-plastic support struts on the fuel tank and percussion rods to the bombs, with plastic card end-plates.

I initially fitted the engine upside-down then wondered why the cowling panels didn't fit! I managed to correct that and deliberately left some of the covers off to show the engine details. While I'm reasonably able to effect the winter snow scheme, this kit was a first in using homemade blackwash to highlight the paneling. Needless to say, on covering up the paintwork with the blackwash, I was rather worried about the outcome but it came out rather well.

have two Hs123 kits on the market. This is the first one, although the colour scheme I chose is actually one offered in the second kit... I couldn't wait! There are some very clear photos of this aircraft on the internet, although the winter distemper suggests a recent application and therefore not quite as murky as I've made mine. I use Humbrol enamels on my kits, especially the newer ones from their WW2 Luftwaffe range.

The aircraft is 'Blue 4' from Erg.St./SchG1, early in 1942, and photographed near Wjasma at the time of its demise. Hope you like the finished kit.

Regards,

Paul

  1. Welcome to iModeler Paul! Your choice for a premiere is an excellent one, I’d say you capture a worn winter wash quite well, and the model looks solid. The partially open engine cowling adds some fun to the beholder, I like it.
I’ve got the old Esci kit on the pending pile for more than 1 year, just when I got my hands on the Vector detail set for the cockpit and engine. A far more expensive project than buying Gaspatch kit

  2. Great looking build Paul. Welcome to the site.

  3. Really nice work on this. Your paint finish came out very well.

  4. So much talented people here. I‘m afraid of posting my modells here in display. Nice Job!

  5. Pedro, Matt, Dale & Ralph... thanks very much for your comments. Glad you like my first contribution. Hopefully I'll have some time to post some other builds in due course.

    Paul

  12. Paul,
I think you’ll find this site a great home for you passion of the hobby. This group of contributors has become a family of kindred souls who all enjoy the same passion. I live by one golden rule when it comes to modeling—if You like it, it’s good. We all are our own worst credits.

    Keep building...it keeps us sane.

  13. Congratulations on a great debut - and welcome, Paul. You are in the right place. Love this build - looks like it has been hard at work!

  14. Welcome aboard - looking forward to more posts!
The Gaspatch HS-123 is also waiting in my stash - the third variant of the kit though, being an early A1 with multiple legion Condor markings. Fortunately he offers a masking set for the "splinter"-like camo that I will need to get before tackling this beautiful kit.
    Well done build Paul!

  15. A great build, and welcome aboard!

  16. Paul,

Very nice work. The winter scheme came out great.

I was in the same place last year putting my work out there for the first time, but the folks on here are fantastic and incredibly encouraging. Keep up the good work

  17. Excellent build! The extra effort really shows. Welcome aboard.

  18. Guys, again thanks for all of your comments... ;-).

  19. Paul ( @paulh ) Welcome to iModeler! This is a great first post and I think we'd ALL love to hear & see more from you! Personally, I've been lurking around here for a couple years and have only composed 2 articles and NEITHER features a model!
    Keep it up, amigo!

  20. Lovely build! Great to see you've offset the control column and ailerons! Love the HS123! Must get one, now that I've seen your build.

    • Doug, thanks for your comments. GasPatch's Hs123 is a lovely model to build, and there are plenty of alternative colour schemes you could apply. I'm sure you would enjoy building it.

      Regards,

      Paul
