Sculpting and Scratchbuiling Figures and Weapons for the Huey Hog

Sculpted chief and door gunner figures and scratchbuilt their M60s + ammo belts + boxes + bungie chords. I couldn't help have Gen. (then Col.) Robin Olds in mind when I was painting the figures - that and the era of the mustache!

The ammo belts are made from masking tape and wire, painted brass, copper, and red tip tracers (every 5th round)

Added details to the bird like nose mounted FM antennas and missing rivets/hinges

If I could do this all over again, I would open up (roll down) the side windows - forgot about this while building - things got very hot and humid in 'nam. I have a rather clear image in mind of this bird skimming at tree top level, so sculpted the figures in their daring, nearly-out-the-door positions!

  1. Best rendition of that kit I think I have ever seen!

    • Thanks Rob - it was a lot of work making that kit look good...soft plastic, lots of sanding, reshaping (the incorrect side profile), rescribing, re-riveting...saying that just so folks know what you're getting into with the kit...

  2. An outstanding piece of modeling right there, Gene...excellent build indeed!

  3. Wow - nice sculpting work! The Huey looks great as well. Entire project well done!

  4. Nice looking Huey! Great job on the figures. Is the kit Revell's boxing of the old Monogram molds?

  5. Thanks for the support gents!

  6. 🙂 … Greetings … 🙂 :
Very nice work on that model and sculpting Gene, a well done tribute,

  7. nice job on those figures, and that Huey itself looks pretty awesome too!

  8. What a great job Gene. I have such a soft spot in my heart for the Huey. I flew "H" models in the Army. I love the sculpting you did on those figures.

    Sincerely,

    Scott

  9. fantastic work..I envy your skill of sculpting figures..

    • For me, I really wanted figures to bring this to life, and there weren't any 1/48 chiefs/door gunners, at least none that were affordable. I encourage you to go try it...you might enjoy it!

  10. Exceptionally well done, Gene! As you said, figures DO bring a model to life.

    Bravo!
