Garage Area's Paint Station; (Booth).

November 7, 2019 · in Aviation · 3 · 1.7K

Someone wrote to me and said that he had to build a paint booth. My answer to him was:

"No you don't have to do that."

From the early 1980's I painted outside next to our swimming pool in San Jose, California, then I moved into our 2 car garage. I built a small wooden table and just kept the garage door open. I moved to Colorado in 2004 and did the same thing, however in the winter month's I had to keep the overhead door closed and I used a small portable heater to help keep me and my paint warm. I started to use a breathing mask, but took it off as when I breathed out, the air fogged up my glasses. I quit modeling in 2016 and have 288 models here at home. I got my lungs checked out @87 year's old in 2017 and the doctor said that there in no evidence of any problem with my breathing and there was no paint down in my lungs.

If you think you still need to build a paint booth, be my guest.

I got my Thomas compressor and 2 of my Badger-200 airbrushed and several 3/4 ounce paint jars in the early 1980's. My 3rd airbrush was acquired in the mid 2000's. I keep several paint jars full of paint. I deep clean my air brushes after each use and they worked like new when I quit modeling in 2016. Cheer's. RJW

  1. It’s a shame you gave it up... you are one of the Masters.

  2. Nice, but some folks just don’t have a garage or live in a country house...I live in a 3 bedroom apartment and also don’t have a paint booth, though I open the window when spraying. My main concern isn’t my health, it’s my kids health, so I avoid painting when the girls are in the same room where I usually work.

I still remember seeing your 1/32 Corsair at the IPMS display table while attending a Blue Angels air show at Moffet Field. I think it was 1983 or 1984. I remember thinking at the time how were you able to achieve such a glass smooth paint finish. I later learned how when I read your painting article in Fine Scale Modeler magazine. No doubt you inspired a lot of us in the hobby to improve our building and painting skills.
