The last kit. Dr.1,DML,1/48
When I first found this site besides posting my builds I also down loaded some of my Dad's that I saved after he departed for Mars in 2012. I also saved a DR 1 that he had started, not content with building kits out of the box, he often would install a little electric motor where the engine would be, discreetly run power leads somewhere in the fuselage and run it up with an electric power source. Some of them would actually taxi a little bit. Seeing the recent posting of David Lanes Dr1, perhaps it's time for me to complete it. Though I like WW I aircraft I usually shy away from them because of the rigging. Along with the kit and instructions that was found in the box was a booklet that game with an old board game called Dogfight!

Your Dad would be proud of you for making this decision. The Dr-1 is very easy to rig, since other than the top wing cabane struts and landing gear, there's nothing besides the control horns on the flight control surfaces that require any sort of rigging. The Dr-1 also has a huge selection of markings, and is probably the most famous of all the Great War fighters.
If it's not too much to ask, can you do a work in progress for this one ?
Believe it or not, I made up a game on my own back in the 1970's that was similar to "Dogfight". My friends and even my younger brother and sister used to play it for hours at a time. We had a lot of fun with it.
My Dad also left for "Mars" in 2012. I miss him every day...

I'm happy you are finishing it. I hope everything goes smoothly. I also shy away from biplanes because of the rigging, and I think that's a common theme lol. I look forward to seeing the complete plane and article.

Build it, Robert! Your Dad would be proud. I built this one when it was brand new in 1993. The stainless steel struts were a monumental pain.

Thanks fellows, I've started a wip, It won't be pretty. Wasn't their an all black Dr-1 that some one flew? I could hide a lot of sins that way, cheers!

Yes there was an all black Dr-1... It was flown by Josef Jacobs going from memory. I think he was a 48 victory ace. Let me see if I have a photo of it and I'll post it up on your WIP.

Robert, try some EZ Line. It will change your mind on rigging! (The really thin stuff is great for 1/48.) I too have a plane of my Dad's to finish. A Top Flight Gold Edition P-47. After I graduated and got a job in '93, it was the first big Christmas gift I was able to get him ever. Sadly, in 20 years he never got it started. We were too busy building Lazy Bees!

What a cool project to honor your Dad. Josh is correct...EZ Line is the way to go, very forgiving. Once completed she'll be your favorite build on the shelf. Do her proud. Robert. ?
Great way to remember your Dad, Robert, looking forward to seeing the finished model, I'm sure it will look great. My Dad used to build Airfix 1/32 scale veteran cars, not sure what happened to them though. Maybe there's a modelling club on Mars, wouldn't that be great.
Looking forward to seeing this built. I love WW1 planes but I never build them because of the extra wing(s) & rigging. I remember playing Dogfight when I was younger.
