This was my surprise present form my son last Christmas.
Never having made a resin kit before the very thought of it terrified me because it was a present and if I made a mess of it I wasn't just disappointing myself.
So, after doing some interneting to get hints, tips and help I stuck my courage to the sticking place two weeks ago and decided to get on with it.

No real problems with the build, a fair bit of filler and sanding especially on the bits that had shrunk. The only real problem was that the canopy didn't fit at all. Some hot water later a reasonable fit was managed. (More of this later).

Painted with Vallejo Model Air AMT-12
Nato Black Acrylic
Humbrol Arrow Red Enamel
Finished with W&N Satin Varnish.

The decals, all six of them, went down with no problems then but when I unmasked the canopy it had gone completely cloudy. Must have reacted with the CA I suppose.

I tried to tint it by hand but the damage was still visible, so Nato Black coating with a glossy coat to try and give it the impression of a canopy.

All in all I'm quite pleased and it looks very sinister in the cabinet.

Thanks for looking,
Cheers,
Alistair

  1. Cool to see this kit, I can remember going to see the movie. I know its not a great movie but sure as hell enjoyed it. Good work on the kit, it looks the part absolutely! You did a great job overcoming your fear.

  2. You did a great job at it, Alistair @alistairfgauld. I always thought to be so cool to see the Firefox modeled. Excellent work with the resin!

I understand the landing gear is made of resin, too. The model being quite heavy, the stress put to those gear legs can be significant and, since they are resin, the may sag over time. It has happened to me in the past. What I do in "resin landing gear cases", is to have the model "rest" at its display case on, say, three humbrol tins or other suitable supports (two underwing and one under the nose). I display the model sitting on its legs for short times only. It doesn't sound very smart, but at least I can "have" my model intact for many years.

Sorry for the blah blah blah! I love your work!

Now onto your second resin kit! You can find unbelievably exquisite subjects in resin!

    All the best!

  3. sinister is as sinister does. I like it.
