1/48 Soviet aircraft
Recently I've complete two world war 2 era Russian aircraft. A Zvezda PE-2 and a A.M. IL-2.
The Zvezda kit is an awesome kit to build, perhaps one of the best kits on the market.
The Accurate Miniatures kit wasn't too bad either, but not as trouble free as Zvezda's kit.

I’ve never build either of these two types before, so it was interesting to build something different.
Great work on both. How did the Zvezda decals perform on the PE-2?
The decals were top notch, as far as I could tell. They are very thin. I liked everything about the kit, but the landing gear is very delicate.

Very nice pair! Funny that the Pe-2 kit isn’t often seen and I had the impression the blame lays in the kit being somewhat hard to build. Both look models look terrific
Zvezda did a magnificent job producing that PE-2 kit.
The interior is very detailed . It comes with some very nice crew figures. It does have some very teensy parts that are difficult to work with.
Really good builds. I have the Zvevda Kit in the stash and it is going to be moved a lot closer to the top of the pile after checking yours out.
The Zvezda PE-2 has a lot of parts, but if you take your time , it goes together pretty easily. I think it’s the best aircraft kit I’ve done, probably As good or better then any Tamiya or Hasegawa for fit and ease of assembly.
Both models are beautifully made, Jay. Got the AM Il-2. Got the MPM Pe-2 (...yes, bought before the Zvezda came out). Your great jobs made me thinking starting them.

It would be interesting to compare the MPM & Zvezda kits to see the differences . The Zvezda has a very detailed fuselage interior and an engine if you want to leave the panels off of the engine.

MPM is definitely lacking, no engine at all and I suppose the Zvezda interior is better. I can also assume that the fit of the Zvezda is light years ahead!

Both superb models with skillful freehand airbrushing. I like the colors you chose for the multi-colored Soviet scheme. What paints did you use? The darker than average tones look right to me (as in period photos). Your decal application is also really good, notably for the complex slogan on the nose of the Pe-2. It looks painted on. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for your encouraging words, Colin. I used Tamiya XF-67 NATO Green, XF-63 German Grey, XF-52 Flat Earth, XF-23 Light Blue. I sprayed it with clear gloss before I put the decals on and then after the decals had dried I gave it two or three coats of clear flat . For the interior I used XF-19 Sky Grey to which I added a little olive colored paint. The instructions call for some interior parts to be painted “American Green”, and other bits painted black. I used Zinc Chromate green for the “ American Green”; nothing is more American then Zinc Chromate , unless it’s apple pie, or coffee flavored ice cream.
This is a very nice pair of Soviet planes. I especially like the finish. They really look outstanding, and are something you don't see very day.
