Airfix Mk1 Tank “Mother ” Dio 1/72

April 10, 2020 · in Diorama · · 7 · 1.8K

Hi to all of you iModellers, it's been a while since I posted anything but as I'm stuck indoors along with the rest of the world I decided it was a good time to catch up.

This is my interpretation of the original picture showing the prototype Mk1 tank undergoing trials in January 1916 in the grounds of Hatfield house, Hertfordshire ,U.K.

It is based around the ancient and inaccurate kit which still builds up into a nice tank but needs some research to be correct, I'm told that when the guys from Airfix did moulds for this kit back in the 1960's they used for there drawings an original tank in Bovington tank museum that was actually a mish mash of different machines ,a similar story to the one about the Mk1 which has the wrong wings.

Anyway hope you like, it all comments are welcome.

Neil

  1. Good job, and I definitely like the subject with a great idea for a display. I know very little about the tanks of WWI but think they are pretty ominous looking beasts.

  2. Cheers Walt, you have to remember that in those days most of the German troops were rural farm workers and had never seen many motorised vehicles of any sort, I read that on the first occasion that these monsters came rumbling across no-mans land through the mist and smoke many of the troops facing them dropped there weapons and ran in terror , can't blame them really.
I'm fascinated with these tanks and the lads who climbed into them.
    Thanks for looking, N.

  3. Looks terrific, Neil! Myself also no armor guy, but build is top class! Nice diorama.

  4. Very cool build Neil ! @neil-foster
As an older real life tank crewman, I can appreciate what you have done here. We owe everything he have today to these fellows. A brave lot indeed.

Stay safe and Happy Easter my friend.

    • I always welcome your opinion Louis so thanks buddy, my great grandfather served in the great war and sadly died in 1918 in the Somme region so he would almost certainly have seen these monsters in action, I would love to speak to him.
