Tamiya 1/48 Scale WW2 Aircraft Carrier Tug

April 11, 2020 · in Aviation · · 11 · 2.1K

Hello all, I updated this post with pics of the painted tug operator added.
Well while I wait for another F-104 kit to arrive I decided to cut the boredom by building the little tug that came with my scale kit. Took me a whole 6 hours start to finish, but it was fun! Not the most complex build, but I'm happy with the result .

  1. The weathering look real...excellent job on your model, including the "IF" photos.
Using my professional photography background "IF" means "IN FOCUS."

Thanks for sharing your wonderful model.

  2. Thank you so much Rodney!

  3. Very realistic-looking weathering, Rick. Just like on earth moving equipment we have all seen at construction sites. Did you do the worn metal look by painting on the darker shade or by a rubbing off the paint to an undercoat? If that is painted on, you have an artist's eye for just the right amount of delicate brushwork.

  4. Thank you Colin it’s a mix of under painting and sponge work. I studied a lot of pictures of rugs from that time and they are usually in pretty rough shape which is what I love to paint! Thanks for checking it out!

  5. This is a fantastic model Rick. The weathering is simply perfect!

  6. I have to say I absolutely Love the finish you achieved on your kit. It looks incredible. That said though, my experience with navy craft and equipment, is that they do not leave bare metal exposed. That would not likely be found on a carrier...so much as a ground station maybe taken ashore by the marines or something. Still artistic license is very much allowed and you did an incredible job.

  7. Thanks Walt! That’s what makes modeling fun, doing what we wanted making our own decisions.

  8. Nicely done! Very authentic looking."It's better to burn out then it is to rust".

  9. Very nice result, I like it very much!
