Tomahawk! Curtiss Mk. ii in 1/48

April 25, 2020 · in Aviation · · 15 · 2.1K

This is AK431, a workhorse from the North Africa campaign, based in Fayid, Egypt in 1943. I was attracted to the 's battered, leaky look - a survivor in a tough environment. Apart from an unfortunate Me-109 I mauled as a 10-year-old, this is the first desert scheme I've attempted in the second phase of my modeling career.

The is a nice kit - easy to build with a nicely detailed interior. I added a Master gunsight and replaced the pilot with the one I didn't use from the Tamiya P-38, a well sculpted figure that deserved to be reassigned.

Forgive my amateur Photoshop experiment with getting this thing to fly. Well, under the circumstances, you've got to keep yourself entertained.

Thanks for looking.

  1. Very photo-realistic Tim. It's great to see some larger scales built wheels up. I think if you threw a backdrop on one of those photos, most people wouldn't be able to tell it's to scale. Your photography (lighting specifically) is perfect. I love it!

  2. Nice looking camo

  3. Excellent result with this great kit.

  4. Good looking P-40 Tim. One can never build enough of them.

  5. Very nice! Looks great, did the pilot like being reassigned?

  6. Ha! Well, he didn't complain, despite the smaller mount.

Excellent work with your Tomahawk. I like it.

  8. Excellent build of your Tomahawk Tim!

  9. Yeah get that prop to spinning and put some azur blue sky background in there, you won't be able to tell it's a model. The pilot is in a very good action pose too. Great work.

  10. Thanks very much, everyone!

  11. What a great Tomahawk! The weathering looks the part and the inflight pose takes my imagination to a combat manoeuvre up above Libyan skies

  12. Thanks, Pedro! Exactly where my imagination was too - glad it comes across!

  13. That's a real beauty! Love the desert schemes, and you got a perfectly worn look to her. Excellent!
