1/48 Kakajima Ki-27 (Nate) Empire of Japan GB

May 31, 2020 · in Aviation · · 6 · 1.2K

This is one of my entries in the iModeler Empire of Japan Group Build initiated by Louis Gardner. There must be lots Japanese subjects in our respective stashes as the response to this GB has been tremendous. I know in my case I needed some reason to build my Japanese subjects so thanks Louis for inviting me to participate.

This is the old kit and my model represents a Ki-27 from the 101st Training Regiment, Kakogawa A.F., 1942. This model was build OOB ,with the exception me adding some PE belts, to the seat.. The cockpit detail is OK because not much of it is seen after closing the fuselage halves together. I used AS-29 INJ Grey Green from a rattle can as I'm trying to exhaust my stash of rattle can paints. Cockpit interior was painted with Model Master Intermediate Blue and a light wash was applied to bring out some detail. The kit decals were used and they preformed quite well, even the stripes. Nylon thread was used for the antenna and after applying a top coat of Future to seal the decals, I liked the finished look so no further top coat was applied. Hey, they all had to be new at some time.

Next up will be Tamiya's old J2M3 Raiden (Jack) kit. I must add I've been really impressed with the subjects and quality of the submissions to this GB. That's what make this hobby fun for me and hopefully for all of us, so keep up the good work folks.

  1. Hello Tom,
Your first entry looks spectacular, and is up to your usual high standard. I have been watching your build as it progressed along. Thanks for accepting the invitation, and I hope to see your next one come to life. We have been blessed with a lot of fantastic subjects in our ever growing Empire of Japan group build. I hope this continues...

I have the 1/48 Tamiya Raiden kit in the stash and if time permits, it might hit the work bench too. It's an older one by Tamiya but it still builds up nicely as does this older Mania / Hasegawa kit you have built for us here. These kits even though they were designed back in the 1970's, they still hold up well and can be built into a nice looking model, just as you have demonstrated here.

  2. Beautiful job, Tom!

  3. Great looking Nate, Tom. Beautiful OOB! Tamiya IJN greygreen looks nice!
    Looking forward to your Raiden.
    All the best!

  4. Great looking Nate.

  5. Looks great! This GB is turning out some really handsome projects...

  6. Impressive build Tom.
Besides the overall build, I really like the way you attached the antenna wire.
