U.S. Mitchell B-25 Bomber, AirLines FROG 1/72

May 9, 2020 · in Aviation · · 14 · 2K

I had a lot of fun with this kit. It was a re-do, one of the first models I had ever built in '65. This build is mostly OOB, with a few changes. No weathering was attempted, other than paint shades (airbrush practice) its the first kit in a long, long time. This started out with an iModeler article by Louis Gardner about the Dornier Do 17z-2. I purchased the ICM kit last September and proceeded to get restarted in the hobby. I found the kit was missing the nose canopy in November, of course after I started construction, I did check all the parts prior, except the clear parts in the nice neat clear bag. After an E-mail exchange with ICM in Kyiv, Ukraine, they would send the clear sprue parts when able, which was December around Christmas and I got the parts in late January. In the meantime while I was waiting for the part, I had purchased two more kits for the stash! I love this addictive hobby. Then I found the B-25 Mitchell on E-bay and here we are. The background for the photos at the end are of my fathers' unit from WW2 , 66th Armored Regiment, deployed with the 2nd Armored Division, North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. Severely wounded in action Northern France August 1944. My fathers' cousin was the B-25 pilot in the Mediterranean Theater, he had some harrowing accounts to tell.

  1. Great work on an old relic! Nice job and welcome to the site. Awhile ago I was doing this kit also, it ended in disaster, as I was drilling a hole in the bottom for a self made stand... well it wasn't pretty.

  2. Thanks and Thanks for the welcome aboard!
I discovered my Dremel was too fast when I melted an upper wing hole opening.

  3. Welcome Walt. Considering the age of this kit and the amount of work you put in, well done. Something to be proud of for sure.

  5. That's a beautiful job, Walt! Great photo and commenting presentation, too. I love building and seen built these lovely old kits.
    Congratulations on your first article!

  6. I love how you captured the gear just about retracted, great job Walt!

  7. Thanks Paul, I was looking for the flying effect.

  8. bravo...great to see built

  9. Thank you Bob. It was a fun build.

  10. Walt I've never heard of this kit, looks really simple and a little crude. But boy you've done a really nice job of finishing her into a nice presentation. When I returned to this hobby I spent lots time building old Monogram/Revell kits to acquire some skills and learn new techniques. My grand kids got a lot of those models to play with. Nice job and welcome to iModeler, lots of nice folks reside here.

  11. I'm truly not the expert in who built what when or reboxed kits, but e-bay has quite a few kits available under the vintage heading from $5 to $125 quite a spread. There is not much detail the panel lines are raised, its a bear to fit up. Two piece engine cowels and nacelles made for quality time on task skill set development, it was fun. Thanks! It's a great group to be a part of.
