Samurai Phantoms! For Phantom Phanatics only…
The gentleman who manages the Asian Air Arms special interest group sent me the following email and the photos that accompany this post, asking for help getting the word out about this resource for Phantom modelers. As a phellow Phantom phanatic, I've already ordered one for myself, and am happy to spread the word. In fact - when I saw that photo of the dayglo-laden support ship, I immediately secured another EJ to add to my World of Phantoms project (see the Aircraft WIP thread)!
I thought others might be interested as well, so here is the email I received from Brian Griffin at Asian Air Arms:
With 69 pages, "Samurai Phantoms" has been created with the modeler in mind, by Andy Binks. (You may recall that Andy recently released his first book, the superb "Samurai Starfighters".)
"Samurai Phantoms" comprises 74 never-before-published personal colour photographs, as well as additional images highlighting those important details that turn a model into a masterpiece. It will be printed as a softback (20x25cm) on 100# Premium Lustre Gloss (148 GSM) Paper.
The price is £30 for the UK and £35 overseas - postage is free! As Andy will be producing just 100 copies, we strongly recommend that you place your order soon as possible - they are likely to sell out and become "collectors' items" very quickly!
Andy will be collecting paid-for orders prior to mid August 2020, before arranging for printing and then delivery by post.
Sadly, due to the worldwide Covid crisis and subsequent lack of model shows, there are only three ways to obtain a copy of the book:
- UK residents - £30.00 each including UK postage. Please provide your delivery address by e-mail
- Non-UK residents - £35.00 each for delivery outside the UK. Please provide your delivery address by e-mail
- After 31 August, the book will only be available via the Blurb.com website priced at £35.00 each not including postage. The link is not yet live.

The Japan defence force has quite a standing as planes go internationally.
I have fond memories of Phantoms. And getting killed by them in mock war games in Germany 1978 ! Strafing Phantoms galore...
Thanks for sharing the book and photos. I have always thought that the Japanese had some of the most attractively painted Phantoms on earth. I spent 5 years of my C-141 pilot time stationed at Norton AFB in southern California, and we often made trips to Japan. On several occasions we transited the bases that had Japanese F-4s, and I would always marvel at the attention to detail in the paint schemes. I never seemed to have a camera with me, so I never got a chance to take photos. Their F-104s often had similar paint schemes. I have a 1/48 Hasegawa F-4EJ and a 1/48 Eduard Eiko F-104 working their way up the building line.
