1/48 Roden OV-1C Mohawk

August 21, 2020 · in Aviation · · 7 · 2.1K

This is the OV-1C . I used Quickboost resin propellers, scoops, and exhaust. For the small details Eduard photo etch sets for the cockpit and exterior. This is a difficult kit in terms of fit especially the canopy. Even the decals were very challenging. You can see all the build photos, details of the poor fitting areas, and what is required to correct them in my build log section https://davidsscalemodels.com/build-log/1-48-ov-1c-mohawk/

  1. This brings back a lot of memories of the Mohawks that used to be stationed at the Grumman facility in my home town of Stuart Florida. Thanks for sharing such a nice build!

  2. Nice looking Mohawk. A bit better lighting would help us see more detail...

  3. Nice work. That Roden kit, like the airplane it represents, is often underestimated. With a bit of effort, it makes up into a very nice model, as you demonstrate here.

There's one thing that nobody I know who's made a model from this kit has gotten right on the first attempt (including me), and that is how the cockpit side panels open. While it appears reasonable that they would have their hinge along the upper edge, in fact they do not. The "turning points" are at the forward and aft upper corners, with the top edge of the canopy "ducking under" the frame. Very counterintuitive, but a former Mohawk driver set me straight about what's what. Speaking from experience, it's an easy fix.

  4. Great looking Mohawk, David!

  5. Very nice build, David.

  6. Hello David,
    Enjoyed your heavily armed Mohawk.
    Regards, Dirk / The Netherlands.
