Accurate Miniatures 1/48 P-51B

August 30, 2020 · in Aviation · · 18 · 2.8K

My latest is the reboxing of AM's P-51B, and represents" Missouri Mauler" flown my Captain Willard Milllikan of the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group. He was involved in a mid-air collision with a wing mate while on a strafing run in 1944 and would spend the rest of the war as a POW. However, he would stay in the service and would reach the rank of Major General before retiring.

Much as been written about the AM series of 's, so no kit comments are necessary. I've always enjoyed building them and with the exception of rather thick canopy glass they are fun to build. Only additions added to this P-51B were an Ultracast seat and some exhause stacks. The rest is OOB except the whip antenna made from the spares box.

The NMF is Model Car World Bare Metal covered with Testors Dullcoat from a rattle can. Other paints are a mix of Model Master and acrylics. The decals are from Superscale 48-591, P-51B Aces. The race to deplete my stash continues, as if that will happen any time soon.

  1. I love it, Tom! Just the same as it's nice to see an OD D-model, its interesting and refreshing to see a NMF B/C-model. Well done, thanks for sharing!

  2. Very nicely done cockpit ! Love it.

  3. I am in awe of anyone who can do a natural metal scheme this well, Tom (@tom-bebout). Well done inside and out.

  4. Beautiful 'B' bird!

  5. Well done Tom, NMF excellent. Awesome cockpit as well. Love the AM Mustangs no matter what box it is in. Nice that Academy and Italeri reboxed not only the Mustangs but some of the other AM kits between the two kit producers.

  13. Super job on that natural metal finish Tom! AM molds are indeed great builds like Chuck said.

What's the word on Model Car World paints? I just found about this line.

  14. Beautifully-done P-51, Tom. I really like the look of the bare metal finish. It has an authentically weathered look like a real warbird of the time.
