1/72 Eduard Spitfire HF Mk VIII

October 23, 2020 · in Aviation · · 12 · 2.4K

This is the HF Mk VIII. The markings are for SAAF No 1 Sqn, the "Billy Boy Squadron" Trigno, Italy, March 1944. It started off as a weekend edition kit but I added a Eduard Zoom set (the PE rearview mirror tested my eyesight!), Eduard Brassin wheels, cowl and exhaust and turned brass Master Barrels. The model was painted using MRP paints. My only complaint is that the markings were printed out of register and some had to be sourced from a Xtradecal sheet. It was a great kit and I have several more 1/72 Eduard Spits in the stash that will definately be built. It is one of the more colorful Spitfires in my collection and the addition of this one makes 12 Spitfires in my display case!

  1. I love the red wingtips on this plane, Geoffrey (@caabreu). It really makes the camo stand out on the well-built kit.

  2. Hard to believe from the photos that that's 1/72. That's how good Eduard is.

  3. I go with Tom's comment above, George!
Excellent build of a seemingly excellent kit!
PS I love your spit collection!

  4. Fantastic result, Geoffrey.
That rearmirror must indeed be very small at 1/72.
    It does however look great.
Add me to Spiro's comment, a great looking Spitfire collection.

  5. For a 1/72 your Spitfire sure looks like a bigger size model, excellent paint work. Btw, that a neat display cabinet, I couldn’t help noticing the “Cruz de Cristo” Portuguese markings on the clipped version 😉

    • Yes Pedro, I am Portuguese. My mom is from near Aveiro and my father's family was from Faial, Azores. I was born like my father in San Francisco. As a result I like to build Portuguese aircraft.

  6. Geoffrey thanks for posting this superb Spitfire. Your model is an AWESOME rendition of this iconic SAAF Spitfire. As a South African it is always nice to see the SAAF acknowledged for their contribution during the war. Everyone of the South Africans that participated in WW II were volunteers.

    • Thanks Lorne. I have spent time in SA. I raced road bicycles there in 1995. I stayed in Benoni and still have several good friends there. I also helped a former SA women's national road cycling champion and two time Olympian immigrate to the U.S., Jackie Martin.

  7. Very nice! Love the unique scheme - really stands out. Detail work is fantastic, and that's a killer collection of Spits you have thee.

  8. Nicely done, great looking scheme!

  9. I love the different markings! Nicely done!

  10. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
Your work on this Spitfire model is just plain extraordinary Geoffrey.
From the bright red wing tip ( which accentuates them just perfectly ) to the painting and subtle weathering, this is a well done model, more so in that scale.
