Curtiss P-36, 27th Pursuit Squadron, Cleveland National Air Races

January 11, 2021 · in Aviation · · 12 · 2.4K

This is my first post at iModeler, and I wanted to share my version of the 27th Pursuit Squadron CO's plane, as it appeared at the Cleveland National Air Races in September 1939. At that time the was the most modern US fighter (pursuit) plane. It was also an important contributor for the French Air Force (Armee de L'Air), where it achieved numerous successes in the "Phoney War" (September 39 through April 40).

  1. Very nice Bob and welcome to the forum. I also used the Hobbycraft kit to make its companion, #67...https://imodeler.com/2016/12/hobbycraft-148-p-36/

  2. Thank you, George. I had seen your model as part of the research on my project. That was a great scheme you executed there, on a lesser known member of the squadron.

My research also indicated these experimental water color schemes were not a success in the USAAC, as it was near impossible to clean out from the recesses in the airframe.

Have a great day and a Happy 2021!

    • Very nice rendition of this airplane Bob, and welcome to iModeler.

The P-36C restored at Fighter Rebuilders in Chino back in 2015 that is now part of The Fighter Collection at Duxford was one of the P-36s of the 17th PS that was painted with this water-based camo. When I examined it up close, you can still see the lines of the camouflage pattern etched in the aluminum skin. Not visible further than a few feet, but it's there.

Here's a picture of the airplane as restored when it was flown at Chino before being sent to the UK. It's P-36 #210, "last of the (not so) many".

      • Tom, thanks for the kind remarks and the additional info on the restored P-36. I have been following your work for a long time and it's an honor to have you review one of my efforts.

        Best wishes and happy modelling.

        Bob

    Welcome aboard!

  7. Welcome and nice work, Bob! That’s a great use of that kit. Excellent masking job. Are those aftermarket decals?

    • Hi John.

The decals were from the 'spare parts box'. Tail numbers were from Accurate Miniatures F3F-1, CO's double stripe was painted, and the Squadron emblem was from Hobbycraft P-35A and is actually from the Swedish fighter group that had a similar diving hawk or falcon.
