1/144 R5D-3 Blue Angels

March 26, 2021 · in Aviation · 16 · 2.4K

Here is the Minicraft 1/144 C-54 kit released as the Blue Angels R5D-3. I think this livery is one of the most attractive schemes for Blue Angels logistical aircraft carried. I think it perfectly suits the lines of the aircraft. it also has a great 50's period feel with the scallops on the engine cowlings.
good luck using the kit decals for the engine cowlings. I had to hand paint the designs- but used the decals as guides. I loved building this kit.

  1. What a beautiful scheme, Dan!
Really suits the lines of the C-54!

  2. This scheme is indeed beautiful, Dan.
You did a wonderful job on handpainting the cowlings.

  3. Wow, what a colour scheme! But then, anything will come out nicely on a massive Douglas radial transport from a time past. Poor engineers wiping off all oil after each flight to keep it in shiny condition.

    • Yeah Stellan, I found it amazing that the control surfaces were all aluminium, and the way the scallops were done- I have the 1/72 C-54 Revell kit in line for my Blue Angels builds with the same markings. It will be harder to make it look good in the bigger scale...

  4. Absolutely gorgeous, Dan!

  5. Beautiful result.

  6. A very attractive scheme, you did a great job on this!

  7. Another beauty from this series, again, definitely liked.
