Lockheed P-38J Droopsnoot

March 12, 2021 · in Aviation · · 15 · 2.6K

A really nice kit of a lesser known version of the . Built during the 2020 debacle. One of a large number of great kits that I've classified as 20/20, meaning at least twenty years old and purchased for less that $20.00. You don't have to spend big bucks to have fun.

  1. Great job on the Academy kit, Bryan!
    I love the Droopsnoot version!

  2. Nice work. I agree on the 20/20 thoughts. Plenty of great kits from the 1993-2003 period that are pretty cheap these days. Heck, I still look for $8 Monogram P-47s at shows!

  3. Turned out good! Rarely seen built, have that in the stash too.

  4. Very tidy build. I have built a couple of the Academy P-38's and really enjoyed the process aside from the rather fiddly nose section on the armed version.

  5. Very nice unusual P38, Bryan.
Was not aware of this P38 version.
Definitely will start searching on this Droopsnoot.
    Love your 20/20 approach.

  6. Well done! I'm a huge fan of old, cheap kits!

  7. Well done Bryan, can't ever remember seeing one build. Having built several of their P-38's I've found them to be nice little kits. An Ultracast seat and wheels brings them up a notch IMHO. Nice to see this one done, I like it.

    • I'm pretty much over aftermarket stuff. Resin cockpits rarely fit, PE is mostly a hassle unless the parts are large enough to be seen without an electron microscope. Perfume on the pig, as it were.

  8. Love your 20/20 thing too. Very true, it doesn't take big bucks, as you've shown here. Hoping to get a Monogram Droopsnoot built someday with their newer kit decals for Bomba-Dear. Nice, straight P-38 Bryan. Love it.

  9. Bernart Aviation Ltd, LLC, must be running three shifts a day, 7 days a week! 🙂

Nice result on a kit one doesn't see built every day.

  10. Neat build, and good to see a version of this that isn't Tamiya, definitely liked. I use a similar classification when buying wine from a supermarket - 5/12 - it must cost less than a fiver and be at least 12% proof...

  11. Modeling the P-38 . . . most things in nature that are living or man made are bilateral with a right and a left side. Two sides, two halves . . . the P-38 has a 2 and 1 configuration. Two engines and one center nacelle for the pilot. An odd number and a odd set up not found in nature. With twin booms that are made to block fingers and hands, waiting to sabotage paint and decals if one is not careful.

    The model looks great.

    Two thumbs up Bryan

  12. Thank you all for the kind comments!
