1/48 Eduard P51-D5

April 27, 2021 · in Aviation · 16 · 1.9K

Let me present You my attempt in Eduard’s P51 Mustang. This is Chattanooga Choo Choo LTD edition box. But, I didn’t want to make that model, so instead I decided to do Freddie Ohr’s plane in yellow markings.

I don’t want to write about Mustang because it is a history for itself and facts are well known. The model is superb, I got this one in 2019. and it stood on my shelf for almost 2 years. I started assembly few months ago, but I switched to other projects. And finally last week I decided to finish it.

Fit is superb. I didn’t experienced any problem. But, after final assembly and priming the model I decided to use Alclad II colors, and they gave me some real hard time. After painting the left wing one grain of dust fell onto the wing and it literally slipped of the wing and made such a mess which is indescribeable. I had to sand whole wing, reprime it and repaint it. Then again that same wing met the desaster during the paint. Finally I finished painting it. After that I used some AK Xtreme metal paints and I was blown away, I felt more comfortable with Xtreme than Alclad II.

After painting red, yellow and green parts I sealed whole plane with few coats of GX100 varnish. I wanted to make ultra shiny surface because I wanted to achieve metal look.

Decaling went fantastic, without any trouble, all decals and stencils behaved extremely well on surface. After decals I did one more GX100 layer, and I sealed the green nose area in matte to achieve the look of anti glare area on the nose.

Weathering was done with Ak paneliners and Abteilung 502 oils. I didn’t want to make much weathering because I wanted to keep the shiny and metal look of the plane.

So, this is it. My Mustang P51 D5. Excellent model from Eduard, highly recommended. I’ve been thinking whole night, I started modelling by doing almost nothing instead of armor, suddenly, without any warning and without some thinking I’ve began switching to planes. I started Rockin Rhino project, and after that I have to do some armor, the choice will be Takom’s King Tiger II with full enterior and tones of pes and resin, so God help me.

Cheers, stay safe, keep the modelling spirit and be free to comment!

  1. Nice work, Djordje. Freddie would be proud of how well you completed his Mustang.

  2. This is an amazing job, Djordje! Your Mustang looks stunning!
Nice to hear that the Eduard kit is very good.
Keep the modeling spirit high, I love that you tackle all those varying subjects!

  3. Nice job Djordje. She looks fantastic in that paint scheme. The paint and weathering job is well done. I made this model few months ago from the Royal class and experienced only 2 problems when I was assembling it: the plastic piece between the the undercarriage broke off and had to repair it. And the second was the fitting of canopy in closed position. For the second mustang I will keep the canopy open to void this!

    • Thank You Yann!
Yes, I forget to mention the problem with canopy. You must do a little surgery and cutting to make it possible to be closed. Canopy is slightly smaller than the railing for closed position. I don't know how it is possible from Eduard not to see this .

  4. Looks great Djordje, your perseverance with the painting paid off. It’s a really nice result.

  5. Nice work Djordje!

  6. Wow - that is fantastic! I love that scheme, and the paint and weathering work is beautiful. If I can find decals for that in 1/72 I have to build one!

  7. She is great looking, Djordje.
