Tamiya 1/48 A6M3 Model 22a Zero

April 14, 2021 · in Aviation · · 7 · 1.8K

Just completed the superlative . it is a much more complex kit than I am used to building, but it went together without a hitch. this was my first attempt with multilayer chipping, and I have learned some lessons that I will use for my future builds. As usual, the plane was painted with a combination of AK RC and Mr Color paints and weathered with oils and Mr Weathering Color. Upper paint is AK RC305, undersides are AK RC303 mixed with 10% white. The full build log can be found in the .

  1. More impressive paint work Woody, great looking Zero!
    That cockpit looks amazing.

  2. And also this one is a superb build, Woody
Echoing George about the interior, amazing.
The paint and weathering is top notch.

I'm heavily invested in Hasegawa kits, only because they make the most Japanese WW aircraft, but I would replace them all with Tamiya's if those were available (not sure the wife would like that). Hasegawa is great, I really like them, but a lot of their kits are getting 20+ years old and the moulds show their age (ie faint/weak panel lines near the top/bottom of the fuselage).

  4. Fine looking Zero Woody. Cockpit and finish very well done.

  5. You're right, Woody, Tamiya has its detractors but are usually top trumps, the latest kits especially. Terrific work on this Zero, definitely liked.

  6. This is a superb Zero, Woody!
Yep, you are right about Tamiyas: especially the latest are top of the tops.

  7. Beautiful Zero - nice balance of weathering and paint work on this.
