1/48th Hasegawa F4U-4 (Hybrid)

May 8, 2021 · in Aviation · · 15 · 1.8K

Having seen a photo of a -4 in unusual markings I was motivated to attempt to model that plane. The final shot in this presentation is of the actual plane used as the basis of the build. That Corsair was a F4U-4 from VBF-81 in war game markings as seen on Saipan in early 1946.
This model is one of the old F4U-4 Corsairs. I wanted dropped flaps and just happened to have a complete wing from a scrapped HobbyBoss F4U-4 that had been worked to correct the wheel well openings. With a bit of #11 surgery and some trusty green putty the wing and fuselage were mated. Not a perfect match but with some work it did fit. The cockpit was finished with a TD (True Details) resin set and the seat belts courtesy of some left over PE parts. Model Master FS15042 dark sea blue was used overall and the top portion of the cowling was shot with Testors clear flat as an anti-glare panel. Decals came from ye ole decal stash box and pieced together to replicate the markings seen on the real bird.

Hope you enjoy the build and all comments are welcome.

  1. Always nice to sere a good lookin' Corsair!

  2. Jim, my goodness what a great presentation of a real aircraft. Terrific work getting the Hobbyboss wing mounted up. Looks like a flawless job to me. As always, excellent paintwork and the addition of those special markings really set this apart from the ordinary. Another tip of the Ol' Tailhook Cap you way sir!

  3. Good looking Corsair, the markings do look unusual. Nice work.

  4. An unusual but beautiful build, Jim.
A perfect copy of the original one.
    Well done.

  5. Hey Jim! Too bad you don't like Corsairs!

Seriously, that's one fine-looking "Bent Wing Bird!" It sure does have an interesting scheme. I assume it's in 1/48th scale. You did a really fine job of mating the wing to your body. Er ... the PLANE'S body, I mean.

    Bravo!

  6. Great choice of markings.

  7. Great job, Jim!
    Love those unusual markings!

  8. Hi Jim. Another excellent Corsair! The
white bands sure make for a nice contrast with the overall DSB. Great work Jim. Well done!

  9. Well done Jim, especially mating that wing to the fuselage. I like it, especially in those markings..

  15. Thanks to each of you for your kind comments about this F4U-4 Corsair build. It was a fun project to work with a model of my favorite aircraft, the F4U Corsair.
