Operation Barbarossa…1/48 Messerschmitt Bf109F-4, 6./JG54

My father always liked but avoided this camo because he thought it would be hard to do with the airbrush. Back in 2013 he took the challenge and it wasn´t as hard as he had feared.

Used a G-2 kit from their old "J" series as a base. Usual things like seat belts, antenna wire and brake lines added. Painting done with Gunze RLM colors, clear finish once again with Tamiya XF-86 and Gunze H-20. Most of decals and reference taken from Topcolors 19.

The Original aircraft was flown by Hauptmann Franz Eckerle, Staffelkapitän of 6./, Staraja Russa in October 1941. The aircraft was built by Arado and originally fitted with an old DB601E engine before it received an adequate 109F engine, therefore the "87" fuel triangle. Eckerle went MIA on February 14 1942.

  1. Very nice Reini! 🙂

  2. That's a scheme I would like to try - his came out just beautifully! I never noticed it included 2-tone greys - the side fuselage part of the camo was always the "attractive" part of it! And that spinner...that's a bit intimidating in 1/72...

  3. A gorgeous scheme, beautifully executed, Reinhard!

  4. Eine schöne Me 109 Super eines meiner Lieblingsflugzeuge

  5. Great airbrush work!

  6. One of my favourite cammo seen on BF-109, and very well executed.

  7. That’s fantastic. JG54 schemes are always interesting.

  8. Looks super. This model, like all of your dad's models shown here, is very well-done.

Reinhard, have you followed in dad's footsteps and become a modeler of little plastic airplanes?

    • Thanks a lot Bob!

Yes, when I was a young teenager, I started to build 1/72 aircraft and tanks as well as 1/35 armour models. But then I stopped in my early 20ies, interests changed. The time back then was also the time when my dad got back to this hobby.

My dad and I only have a small man cave at my parents house, only space for one modeller. I´m planning to start this hobby again, building mostly 1/35 armour and maybe some 1/48 aircraft stuff. But as long as my dad is more or less physically able to build models, and with his 73years you never know when it´s over, I decided to step back and let him build.

      • Good for you, Reinhard. Glad to know dad is still gluing-up little airplanes. At 83 1/2, I'm still deep into this great hobby, although my masterpieces don't come close to your dad's, nonetheless, what a great addiction.

  9. Yeah, that's a scheme that does look harder than it turns out to be but anyone with good control of an airbrush (like your father) can get a great result. The "snakeskin" looks cool.

  10. A truly superb scheme, Reinhard.
Can imagine that your dad had doubts before starting this camo pattern.
In the end he did a great job, like always.

  11. What an amazing 109 camo!

  12. Very impressive work! The paint scheme is very eye-catching and unique. I build many WW2 German aircraft and armour subjects because of the various schemes and colors. Once again my compliments to you sir!

  13. Very interesting camo, great work
