F-86D Sabre Dog

July 30, 2021 · in Aviation · · 4 · 1.5K

This the Kitty Hawk kit. The build is SOB except for the pitot tube from Hobbydecal. It's a nice edition. The black “darts” on the tail and drop tanks are cut from black decal sheet. -Color scheme taken from the internet site- SabresandFuries. Many great color schemes. -The paints used are Alclad, Tamiya, AK Real colors, and ModelMaster. Decals taken from Hobbydecal sheet and the kit. -The kit overall wasn't too difficult except for the area around the rocket rack. Multiple fit and adjustment attempts done with the rack. - I was leery of the intake area, but again multiple fit and adjustment attempts resulted in good results. Presented less problem than than rocket pack for me.

  1. That is one well done Dog.

Always liked the Sabre Dog from an aesthetic viewpoint. I think it is because of the big schnoze radome and chin scoop.

  2. Nice job on your build, great looking Sabre Dog!

  3. Awesome Steve, its so nice and clean, well done. The bare metal you've done is excellent - would you mind giving a run down on how you did it?

    • I use Tamiya grey primer as an initial coat. That seems to take down some brightness of the following metallic coats. I used Tamiya AS-12, and Alclad aluminum, white aluminum, and dark aluminum. I looked at different pictures to gain an idea of where to use these shades. I then finished off with a mix of some white with aluminum for the wing upper center panels. The yellow/black tail was sprayed prior to the metalizing- the darts were placed during decal placement. I then used Alclad gloss coat and applied the decals. Resprayed with gloss coat. Then applied light spray of Testors Dullcoat
