Lucky Gallon FG-1 Tamiya 1/48th

July 11, 2021 · in Aviation · · 15 · 2.2K

Here is the latest for fans of the Cleveland Air Races. Cook's Lucky Gallon in 1/48th. New lower carb scoop, abbreviated oil cooler inlets and I made a plug for the tail wheel doors. I had lots of help from the guys on the FB racing page to get the color as close as possible. I used Model Car World Ivory and a mix of Red and a few drops of Black to get the maroon color. Greg Drawbaugh put the decals into production to round out the build. The only cutting to fit the resin scoop was shortening the lower cowl flaps.

Chuck Wahl is currently restoring this airplane back to flying conditions and it will be painted as Lucky Gallon. Can't wait to see this fly!

  1. Now that’s something special!

  2. Nice to see something besides blue. Nice job, Jim.

  3. Neat to see some Corsair History that is off the beaten path. Not all the races where done by Sea furys, Mustangs and Bearcats. The last Corsair to race was back in the 80's when Steve Hinton and Inc. had a Super Corsair go down with Kevin Eldridge at the controls.

    Sweet build Jim.

    Two thumbs up.

  4. Man, that is mytee fine! @jimh, I agree it's great to have some air racers in the place and that one does look cool. Thanks for building her and showing her to us here! 🙂

  5. That is one beautiful corsair.

  6. Great FG-1 in a great scheme. Post WW2 racing planes make up an amazing area for modeling.

    Nice!

  7. Wow, really neat!

  8. Good to see that you're back in the saddle so to speak. That's one nice looking Corsair Jim. Now do you have a nice box to carry it in to an IPMS show?

  9. Great looking racer, Jim.
Colors look awesome, especially on the picture with the sunlight on it.

  10. Great build and a striking scheme, Jim!
