Revell 1/48 F9F-5P

July 25, 2021 · in Aviation · · 32 · 3K

Whew, glad to finish this one off and it did turn out nice. There were a few glitches in assembly that slowed down the line-mainly a bad mis-alignment of the tip tanks at the ends. That took a lot of work to rein in and I had to be very careful not to end up with a slab sided appearance. Out of the box with the exception of an Eduard generic harness set. I used Furball's seal decal for the windows rather than the Eduard mask-paint white-mask again-paint GSB. There is a learning curve and the set is made for the KH Cougar but worked well. Getting the kit decals to conform was difficult, even Solvaset didn't help much. Finish is Model Master Glossy Sea Blue of course, with a final mostly gloss coat of Model Master Lacquer thinned down a bit. Just some Tamiya panel line liquid in the wheel wells, gear area, dive brakes, and cockpit. Great stuff it is.

Thanks and a tip of the old flight cap to Jim Sullivan who kindly cleaned up the photos for you.

What's next? The almost as old as me Monogram T-28. Yeah Boy..

  1. How many F9F-5P in 1/48 scale are out there? Given the kits age . . . it still works. I really like the canopy and the white outline framing the canopy framing. Sort of the eye's of the kit. The paint looks sold and neat Clark.

    Two thumbs up.

  2. These jets always look so cool with their markings and stenciling. You did a really great job on the finish.

  3. This is a truly great build, Clark @clarkcook
Very special to have those double colored clear parts.
How did you achieve those blue and white lines?

  4. Nice job Clark, my compliments on succeeding with the kit decals, I never had much luck with them. An outstanding GSB paint job and colorful markings. Well done Sir. So nice to see a number of modelers working with the ole Monogram 'classics'.

    • 10-4 Jim and thanks again. You know I forgot to mention all of those white stencils with mostly no instructions on where the went. Turned out okay.

  5. Well done, Clark...very eye appealing.

  6. Congratulations, Clark!
An excellent build out if this oldie of a kit!

  7. Hello Spiros...thank you sir..

  8. Nicely done Clark, I like it.

  9. Classic kit of a classic aircraft, great build!

  10. Very well done. It is a shame they destroyed the F9F-5 molds to make the photo recon version, but it builds up nicely!

  11. Nice job! That’s one of my favorite kits.

  12. The sad thing about the F9F-5P kit is, when the Monogram F9F-5 molds were modified to do this, they basically destroyed the F9F-5 molds, which is why you haven't seen a re-release of the fighter version since this came out.

Nice work on this - I didn't have trouble with the decals on mine, but it was one of the last ProModeler releases; those releases generally had better decals.

    • Quite a shame as you said about the molds Tom. I have more of the original kits in the stash than I will ever get around to. I have always enjoyed your builds and reviews too.

  13. Nice job on holding this build together to land with a great looking build. ?

  14. The Panther is one of my favorite Monogram kits. I wish they had seen fit to make a Grumman Cougar and Tiger as well.

    • It's fun to sit back and speculate on what Monogram might have molded in 1/48 scale next. The Banshee, Cougar, and Tiger would have all been good sellers. I believe they would have ventured off to a Neptune and a Mariner. Now where is the Crystal Ball?

  15. Very nice - lots of color in that version! Well done.

  16. One of my favorite airplanes, Clark (@clarkcook), and you have made it shine. Well, done.

  17. Awesome Build Clark and a really nice plane, love the way you've painted it, great scheme.

  18. Thanks Anthony! I appreciate your comments for sure.
