7 - Polar Lights Batcycle

A really nice kit that let me get some experience with figure painting. My conclusion - Tamiya Acrylics suck with figures.

I need to invest in some specific figure paints in the future especially since I'll like to try do some more figures. But I base coated them in Tamiya and then painted over with oils to try and blend. Not too unhappy with my first go at figures but I've seen a lot better.

On the build side it was quite tough - I think it was fault though, there were some quite tough parts that gave me a few hassles and the decals were quite bad, broke apart quite easily.

I would like at some stage to try this one again, but for now want to get some of the other kits.

  1. Tough the build it might have been and with paints not helping, you still came up with a beautiful result, a model not often seen, Anthony!
    Well done!

  2. Anthony, I like it...it has a "classic" look to it. Nice job.
I agree, Tamiya acrylics are not good for brush painting.

    In my opinion:
Artist oil paints are a good figure painting medium...especially for blending and achieve great results. Downside is they take a longer time to dry.
Acrylic paints, such as Vallejo Model Color are great for figure painting. Because they dry very quickly the technique for "blending", highlights and shadows, is adding the colors with layering, adding multiple coats of diluted paint/water...basically tinted water...until the desired effect is achieved.
Hope this helps you out. Good luck!

  3. To me the result of this kit is quite nice, Anthony @anthonyricco
It looks cartoonish, just like the picture on the box.
I'm not into figure painting, but I do agree with Gary (@gwskat) that Vallejo acrylics are very nice paints.

  4. Nicely done! I think it looks more like from the late 60's tv show.
