1/48 SAAF Spitfire MkIX

September 9, 2021 · in Aviation · · 21 · 1.6K

Hi all! First post after lurking for a while.

The South African Airforce has a wonderful history with the Supermarine . First flying them in WW2. The Spitfire also produced one of the great South African aces in Adolf 'Sailor' Malan, who flew for the RAF.

After the war procured 136 Spitfires in 1947. In 1950 the Spitfire was used as a trainer for 2 Squadron pilots serving in Korea, flying Mustangs.

This model was built years ago and all hand painted. Depicting a training aircraft, hence the yellow stripes, Stationed at Langebaan Weg in the early 50's. I've attached some photographs of Spits in the same scheme

I have a few more SAAF builds I'll share in time. Starting some builds again after about 15 years. Enjoy!
