Tamiya P-47D 1/48 Brazilian Air Force

September 26, 2021 · in Aviation · · 22 · 2.5K

Hello,

This is a P-47D with Brazilian Air Force WW2 colors. The newly established Brazilian Air Force (1941) sent the 1st Fighter Group as part of an Expeditionary Force, operating under US Forces in Italy, from mid 1944 until the end of hostilities in Europe.
Since the allies had already air superiority in the area, these birds were mainly engaged in interdiction missions, initially operating from Tarquinia airfield, and moving north eventually. German anti aircraft fire was still very effective, and some pilots were KIA and a few became POW. Yet, they destroyed a lot of targets during their brief campaign.

As for the kit, no need to say anything else about Tamiya’s P-47 kits, they’re just perfect. Decals were FCM, a Brazilian brand which sometimes may pose some problems regarding silvering, so careful sanding and preparation before them is a must. Also used Eduard canopy masks and cockpit PE, and metal guns/pitot tube from Master Models.

The airfields they operated from were almost always very muddy, as my references pictures show, so I’ve decided to go kind of heavy regarding weathering and/or dirt.

Hope you enjoy!

Cheers

  1. Yet another one of your truly excellent builds, George, this time with the very interesting and extremely good looking Brazilian markings. I didn't know that Brazilians fought with P-47s in Europe: thanks for sharing this info, together with the model, with us.

  2. Belo P-47! You did a great job with the Olive Drab, the weathering you applied is just about right to me. Never used the FCM decals (though they have a few 1/32 sheets for WW1 subjects that are quite tempting), but looking at your model I can’t see anything wrong, no silvering in sight. Guess you tame them well George. Parabéns!

  3. Well done, George (@george72). It is nice to see a Thunderbolt in some non-US markings.

  4. Excellent work, George. I’ve always liked those Brazilian P-47s.

  5. Gotta love a Jug! Well done, George. Inspiration for my current builds, Thanks!

  6. Very realistic build George.

  7. 🙂 ... Greetings ... 🙂 :
A very visually noteworthy P-47 George.
Beautiful work on the overall painting and a superb work on
    the weathering.
The use of the Brazilian markings give this model a look and character of it's own
and makes it all the more interesting.

  8. Fantastic result, George @george72
Not so often a Brasilian aircraft is presented.
Your P47 look perfect, especially the weathering is very nice.

  9. Fine build. WONDERFUL finish.

  10. A real beauty! I also love the look of the OD finish you achieved - beautiful paint work. I didn't realize Jugs in Brazilian markings flew in WWII - if I can find a set of decals in 1/72, I may have to add that scheme to my collection!

  11. Nicely done! The Jug looks great in Brazilian colors.
