1/25 AMT Autocar dump truck to log truck conversion

December 20, 2021 · in Automotive · · 5 · 2.1K

One of the better AMT offerings. The good: Most of it went together well and the molding is above average for AMT. The bad: The clear portion for the windshield does not fit very well, and at least on this one the cab required some clever fitting to mate up with the frame correctly.

AMT's Peerless Log Trailer was added to the build, it gives you the parts for the truck as well. This was not as nice as the truck kit and required much cleanup and fitting. With a little extra attention, however, it builds up OK.

Chrome plating was stripped with oven cleaner and repainted, some parts with Model Masters chrome silver, some with Alcad II Chrome. Grab handles were scratched...now that I look at it again they came out somewhat overscale. The engine was detailed up a little bit but not much since the engines of the 1960's were not the nightmare tangle of wire and hose they are today. Rust effects with AK washes and dust effects with very heavily thinned Model Masters Dark Earth.

This was a fun and engaging build, done in 2019.

  4. Many thanks gentlemen

These truck kits are not much like armor or aircraft, I find that quite a bit of work goes into them before they start to look like anything on the bench
