1/48 Tamiya RAF P-47 Thunderbolt

February 7, 2022 · in Aviation · · 18 · 2.4K

P-47D No. 73 OTU, 1945. This plane represents the plan flown by Chief Instructor, Sqn. Ldr. "Nobby" Clark.

Painted with Alclad II Lacquer paints. Decals are Iliad Design, RAF Thunderbolts (except for the wing insignia roundels which were painted with masks cut from vinyl with my new Silhouette Cameo 4 cutter and painted with MRP Lacquer paints. I'll be doing more masks and painting insignias and markings in the future! A light watercolor wash was applied to bring out the detail and finished with Mr. Color semi-gloss and matt clear coat.

  1. Not something you see every day. Had to double check to see if my eyes went bad as it is very rare to see RAF late roundels on a bubble top P-47.

    Excellent paint job.

  2. Beautiful work on a great plane. Love your silver paint work, it looks great!

  3. Great work on the NMF Joe, faultless painted. Not the usual livery, but actually very nice

  4. Great looking Jug, Joe, and a sharp NMF that you've done very well .

  5. That finish looks incredible!

  6. A simple straight forward silver finish that shows the lines of the Jug to perfection. The simple finish is the hardest too finish. 🙂

Some strong work Joe. You can't go wrong with a Tamiya Jug either.

    Two thumbs up.

  7. One of the best NMF finishes I have ever seen. Awesome!

  8. Indeed, an unusual scheme, perfectly rendered, Joe!
    Congratulations!

  9. Very nive results on this P47, Joe @mercenarymodels
The wing roundels do look great, I think you will benefit a lot more from this cutting maschine.

  10. Joe, Killer NMF. Perfect! Overall perfect project, just beautiful. I am saving your pictures as a good reference for a NMF aircraft.

  11. Superb work Joe @mercenarymodels! I almost sprained my wrist pressing that "like" button! ? Great finish and result! ?

  12. A beautiful, pristine build! Well done.

  13. Beautiful royal Jug!

  14. Joe, What a great finish, what colors of Alclad did you use ?
I also really like the RAF scheme.

    • Thank you Terry @shoobiz. I initially painted the model overall with Alclad II Aluminum and followed up randomly with Duraluminum, Dark Aluminum, Matt Aluminum at various panels. I may have used some others. A lot of back and forth working it until I thought it was right (or just tired of painting anymore). Sometimes I'd mix. I don't think there's a right or wrong way. Just do it until it looks right.

  16. Very nice. Did this one myself a few years ago as well as an RAF razor back
