Revell 1/48 P-40b AVG Flying Tiger

July 8, 2022 · in Aviation · · 14 · 1.2K

I picked this up in the clearance section of Hobby Lobby for $4.99- Overall it was a smooth build with few problems. Given what I paid for it, I think I got the most out of this classic. I think from a shape perspective it looks just as good and perhaps even a bit better sitting next to my Airfix Tomahawk.

I added a few extras from the spare box like an Airfix pilot and seat. I also scratch built a few details in the cockpit and wheel wells to add some detail.

Finished with Vallejo paints, Tamiya weathering powder, artist oils, and Tamiya panel liner.

  1. Nice job on an old classic. The Monogram / Revell P-40B/C is an important kit in modelling history IMO.

  2. You're right that, shape-wise, this kit has actually been the gold standard for 58 years since it was released. Historically, it's the first Monogram kit that didn't have the toylike "working features." The raised surface detail is actually right, since it had raised rivets everywhere but the leading edge of the wing to the mainspar.

    Nice work on this.

    • Thanks! I liked the raised detail and it really made me wonder why some people across the net who built this chose to rescribe it? I think the rivets are fantastic and really add to the realism

  3. Old and cheap...she still looks like a P-40 to me...and a nice one at that. Well done, David!

  4. Fantastic job, David!

  5. @dbutlr, That is very nice work on the iconic Monogram kit! ? The ancient kit has seldom looked as good as your model! ? As I looked her over, I thought the markings looked familiar to me. And here is the reason why; I built my own Monogram P-40 years ago with the same!

    • Our two p-40's could indeed be siblings! Yours is very well done by the way. I think your airport photography is a bit superior to my "on the sidewalk in front of my apartment" photos 🙂

  6. Nice work!

  7. Looks great - I love the iconic Warhawk. The Revell kit still holds up well!

  8. Very nice build, David @dbutlr
Your additions to the cockpit and wheel wells are definitely worth it.
So much pleasure and outcome for just $4,99

  9. Great job on a classic!
