VF-84 F4U-1D Corsair

July 20, 2022 · in Aviation · · 8 · 1.1K

A little throwback today. Since I haven't finished anything in awhile I thought I'd dig into the archives. I posted a few of these pics on other sites here and there but never here. -1D finished around 1999/2000. , straight out of the box. This kit has held up well over the years. The plane depicts the Corsair flown by Lt. CDR Roger Hedrick, CO of VF-84 on board the USS Bunker Hill, February 1945. I love the simple Navy markings...all business with a dash of yellow on the nose. Hedrick's first tour was XO with VF-17 in the Solomon Island Campaign, he finished the war with 12 confirmed kills, he retired from the Navy in 1958 with the rank of Rear Admiral. All the photo's were taken with Canon 35mm camera on slide film (before digital cameras existed!) I recently dug them up and had them scanned. They're holding up fairly well, a little discoloring/yellowing. Not as crisp as what I'm now getting today using better lighting, high resolution DSLR digital camera and photo-stitching software but not bad for a hack!

  1. Great corsair! Very realistically weathered- I especially love the present but not overdone chipping effects. Do you remember what you used to do the paint chipping on this project? I would love to get the same effect on my next build(s). The pictures look great too. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Excellent Corsair, Joe!
Great decision to scan the pics and post them here!
