1/48 Airfix Hawker Hurricane Mk. I

August 15, 2022 · in Aviation · · 9 · 1K

Here is my take on the Hawker Mk. I flown by Sgt. Tadeusz Andruszkow, No. 303 (Polish) Squadron RAF Northolt Engalnd Sept 1940.

Overall a nice kit when finished but I had to really fight parts of it- specifically the internal wing braces (which have to be aligned perfectly) and landing gear which were a real let down. Toward the end I was laboring just to finish it.

I built it out of the box with the help of Montex masks (love these!) and Kitsworld seatbelts (did not love these!). Kit decals performed well and the overall fit of the kit was good.

For something new I tried using table salt to do some weathering on the wings in order to achieve some tonal variation. It came out a little too aggressive so I had to tone it down a bit with the base colors, I am now pleased with the result.

Finished with Vallejo acrylics, Tamiya weathering powder, and my own acyclic wash mix.

Nice work done on the weathering.

  4. Nice job on the overall finish, you made a great looking Hurricane.

  5. Very nice! I like all the paint and weathering work. Well done.

  6. Well done, David (@dbutlr). I used Kitsworld 3D seatbelts on my last 1/48 model, and I also wasn't in love with them. Your weathering looks very realistic.

    • Thanks George- I found that the 3D decals did not stick, were a bit on the chunky side, and actually broke which was really disappointing. Glad to know I am not the only one who wasn't thrilled with them!

  7. Great Hurricane from polish squadron!
