Fine Molds Kawasaki Ki-10The Sequel

August 28, 2022 · in Aviation · · 17 · 1K

I’ve already sung the praises of this kit in a previous article, so I won’t say more than “buy this kit,” this time around. My earlier build was one of my first kits completed after a long sabbatical, and I wanted to see how I could do applying some of the new skills I’ve acquired and refined over the last couple of years.

One new thing I tried was a technique I devised to subtly accent the wing and control surface ribs. After priming with Mr. Surfacer 1500, I sprayed the wings with Tamiya JA Grey mixed with 50% white. Then I went over that with a couple coats of gloss clear. Finally I sprayed the whole model with non faded JA Grey. After the paint cured, I very gently wet sanded the wings and control surfaces with a Tamiya sanding sponge, just brushing along the tops of the ribs to expose the lighter paint below. The gloss clear was to help me avoid cutting through to the primer. I have to say I’m quite satisfied with the results. It created a subtle effect that enhances the rib detail without overdoing it.

  1. That's a very interesting technique, with a great result!

  2. The paint finish looks very cool, Steve, along with the rigging.

  3. Your skills have absolutely improved, Steven @mooplace
    This Ki-10 looks excellent.
The applied technique for the ribs did work very well, very nice outcome.
    Well done.

  4. That is simply beautiful!

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Excellent result, Steven, and a very effective technique!

  6. Nice job! Really well done paintwork. I need to get one of those.

  7. A show stopper Steven. Painting a kit one color and making it interesting is not a walk in the park.

    Three thumbs up.

  8. Congratulations, this one looks stunning.

  9. WOW. Very nicely done.

  10. This is one of the prettiest looking Japanese aircraft design and scheme combos Nice!

  11. I have built one of these and it's exactly as you described. I'm surprised we don't see more of them done. Yours is outstanding, and I especially like how the paint looks. I will definitely keep that trick of wet sanding to reveal the underlying color in my bag of tricks. I did it once on a Corsair to reveal the zinc chromate and bare metal colors on top of the wing by the oil coolers, but it looks even better when done on a cloth covered aircraft.

Well done, and I pressed the "like" button.

  12. Beautiful model of an elegant aircraft, and I also will keep your technique in mind! Well done.

  13. Wow! I've had this kit in the stash for some time now but it would never look this good in my hands. That is beautiful work, and thanks for sharing your technique! 👍

  14. Very nice Steve !

  15. Mega clean, nice one

  16. Another great build, Stephen. Thanks for the painting tips. Yours is the first I've seen finished in these kit supplied markings. I hope you will do another.

I saw Steve's fine build at a show in Columbia, SC on 4/20/'24. Very nice & clean workmanship. The stressed paintwork Steve applied to the wings to simulate rib sag is very subtle. He said he plans to do another build of this kit. I'm looking forward to it.
